Hand (paw) hold needed. Dog getting toe amputated

My darling whippet has struggled with corns for years. He recently had one surgically removed from his front foot but unfortunately there were complications and the wound has broken down. Amputating the toe is now the only option. It’s happening on Monday.

i know it’s a common surgery and dogs usually recover well but I’m so stressed already because of the complications he’s already had. I’ve had to have numerous days off work already and will need more while he recovers from this surgery. I feel like a terrible dog owner and a terrible employee. My parents are helping but they can’t care for him every day. He can’t really be left unsupervised because he can get around even the super sized cone he already has.

He can’t have trazadone to calm him as it makes him loopy. Any other oral sedatives have pretty much zero effect on him 😭

I’ve already had the month from hell and this is the icing on the cake.

Hello OP! I’m a few days late to your thread but wanted to ask how your boy is doing? My lad is booked in for a toe amputation next week (recurrent fracture) and I’m also quite nervous about the recovery even though it’s a pretty routine surgery! Is your boy getting around okay?

Our 10 year old had a toe amputated in July, it turned out to be cancer but not spread. She recovered really well, wound healed amazingly well (dissolving stitches), & now that fur has grown back you’d never know. She was limping initially & had the cone of shame which caused her more distress than the wound! Restricted exercise initially just to end of drive, then short lead walks after a couple of weeks. Hope your dog gets on ok

So sorry to hear this. No advice but I can imagine how you feel as I would be exactly the same. Wishing your fur baby an easy recovery.

Damn. After everything he’s now got a nasty reassure sore from the constant bandaging 😥

It was borderline whether to re-bandage after getting the stitches out. I was worried he’d lick the area that was still healing so thought a new bandage was a good idea. Then today I noticed he had fluid leaking through his bandage and took him to the emergency vet to get the bandage removed. Sure enough, pressure sore. I’m a bit gutted. I know it will heal with time but it’s just so hard to watch him still be in pain.
