How much would you expect to pay for a group dog training class?

As title says but would you pay more for agility or scentwork than general dog training.

New local trainer is asking £40.00 for a group class of 4 people

Per class? Unless it's a two hour masterclass I wouldn't spend that much!

zipadeedodah · 05/10/2025 19:35

I wouldn't expect to pay more than £15 to be honest.

TheLilacStork · 05/10/2025 19:40

Wow! Just paid £12.50 per hour’s class, course of 12

muddyford · 05/10/2025 19:45

Four years ago I was paying £30 for a class of four. Now paying £30 for scent session with one other dog.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 05/10/2025 20:01

My trainer charges £80 for a ten week course. There’s usually half a dozen dogs in each class. I much prefer to work with other dogs as it’s good practice for my dog’s impulse control and I can work on him not running off to say hello.

Youraveragelass · 05/10/2025 20:03

Is this specific training or your usual obedience stuff? Obedience stuff, I wouldn’t pay more than £20 an hour. Sports stuff like scentwork, agility, bite work and gundog are usually more. I pay around £40 an hour.

SpanielsGalore · 05/10/2025 20:12

The trainer I went to charges £80 for a four week course of one hour lessons. But the puppy class had 10 in it.
He only charges £90 for four one to one sessions , so I usually do that instead.
It's the same price whatever you do - obedience, gundog, agility or hoopers.

It is a scentwork class but it is a group class. 4 people in the group and a hour long.

If they are a dedicated scentwork trainer and good at what they do, £40 an hour for a small class like that seems normal for my area.

lionbrain · 05/10/2025 21:53

Nope not a dedicated scentwork trainer. General dog trainer no scent training qualifications. Training in a village hall so not a very extensive scentwork location.

Good luck to them if they can get it!

Yikes! That is expensive. I pay 20£ for a private half hour class with a specialist scent work trainer. I also pay 25£ to an ex police dog handler/trainer for 1 hr private session doing tracking. 40 for a group class is ridiculous. They won't get many takers

Ylvamoon · 06/10/2025 06:20

That's expensive!
I pay 60.- / monthly for 1 hour agility in a group of 4... sometimes it's for 4 weeks sometimes 5.
My trainer does workshops on topp of this, they are more pricey at £30.- for 90 minutes/ 5 people.

Abc1weabc1 · 06/10/2025 06:20

I pay £40 for a 2 hour session with 5 in the group for agility.
This is with a trainer who competes at champ level

Lennonjingles · 06/10/2025 06:35

I would do one lesson and see how much individual training the dog is getting. Where I live there’s no training nearby for scent or agility and I’m sure my dog would love it. We only did puppy classes 7 years ago they were £10 each but with over 10 dogs at each session, we only got minimal one on one training.

YorkshireFelix · 06/10/2025 07:53

I pay £40 for an hours long 1-1 with a specialist gundog trainer. And I’ve just completed a 6 week group gundog course with her for £120, which had 6 people in the group. She also does a drop in class sometimes which I think is £10/15 a session.

I think £40 a class with 4 people is very pricey!

Kbroughton · 06/10/2025 11:46

Just paid 70 for a 6 week course which I thought was slightly on the expensive side! I have also paid 90 for a 121 7 week gun dog course which O thought was good.

cobrakaieaglefang · 06/10/2025 11:57

I pay £80 for a block of 4 x1 hour lessons in groups of around 5 dogs. Scentwork and trailing. Different locations each session to keep the dogs fresh.

Newpeep · 08/10/2025 13:31

It varies.

Im an agility trainer for a KC club. We’re all volunteers but very experienced and qualified in various things and keep up to date with modern methods. We charge £7 a session for anything, GC, Rally, Agility etc. we regularly help people into some of the most prestigious competitions in the country but equally celebrate the pet and that relationship too.

I go to another volunteer club to self train my own dog agility and pay £30 a month (a session a week).

I did go to a business until I realised I was teaching them and paid £14 a session. No qualifications but fairly good facilities.

It’s really variable.

Newpeep · 08/10/2025 13:38

Class sizes for agility we have a max of 6 and for beginners and improvers we like to have an assistant as well as the main trainer as we tend to cover more over a shorter period of time for the younger and less experienced dogs. Less waiting around.

Obedience and GC it tends to me a max of 8 but that's because people can work at the same time.

The business I went to was often 10 in an hour. We did virtually nothing some weeks.

Newpeep · 08/10/2025 13:41

Our club often books an excellent crufts champ trainer and we pay £30 each for a 2 hour session with 4 - 5 of us! We cover huge amounts in that time.

LibisMum · 08/10/2025 13:41

I pay the equivalent of just under £8 per hour session (just gone up as the hall fee has gone up) class of 7 ATM, but the same fee even if only 4 in the class and same fee for every class, from puppy to advanced/scent tracking/obedience/agility.. We pay for a course of 7 classes up front, move up to the next level course when the dog is ready.

Mix in the class of "just want a well trained pet" and those wanting to compete, so all the correct commands and signals are taught.

Experienced and qualified trainer who always seems to qualify for obedience at Crufts with her own dogs.
