What counts as a really high value treat?

The problem is my dog is very small, with small mouth. He's adult (recently adopted) but puppy sized. I've been using pieces of grated cheese, which he likes, but is now used to. I'd like to use something higher value to train him out of reactivity.

Sausages here - cut up v small

Irisilume · 02/10/2025 19:30

Mine go wild for chicken breast

chattyness · 02/10/2025 19:32

Roast chicken bits, my boy loves them

Lennonjingles · 02/10/2025 19:32

I wouldn’t give a lot of cheese, it’s too high in fat, cooked liver, my dog will do anything for, but only a small amount, he also loves chicken, but too much upsets his tummy.

BlouseyBrowne · 02/10/2025 19:33

Pepperami - in tiny bits.

Flibbertyfloo · 02/10/2025 19:34

Liver paste. You can buy it in a tube. You can also get teeny little liver treats on Amazon that are like very small round tablets. Mine love those.

Lightuptheroom · 02/10/2025 19:40

Liver paste, primula cream cheese, sausages, hot dogs, carrot, veg anything very smelly, fish skins, chicken feet...

JDM625 · 02/10/2025 19:44

I too wouldn't be using cheese due to the fat content! My dog loves chicken in any form. I'd try chicken breast, or any plain, meat product that isn't processed. When we did puppy training years ago, the trainer advised us to use tiny pieces such as 0.5cm cubes.

I'm surprised at people suggesting sausages which could contain onions/garlic and other things dogs shouldn't have. There might be some sausages which and are just meat though. And someone suggesting pepperami! Its very high in salt and MSG- something dogs also shouldn't have!

After a lot of trial and error, I found the Barker & Barker training treats (Amazon) great for my littl’un. They’re a bit bizarre, like liver flavoured aspirin 😆, but my dogs all love them - and they’re tiny, so I wasn’t having to wait for the dog to eat even little treats. Bonus is that they’re dry and clean, so you can just have them in pockets. I still buy them now as the dogs like them so much.

FuzzyBumbleeBee · 02/10/2025 19:49

What counts as high value will vary between dogs you will need to trial a few treats.

I like to change treats regularly for my boy, my girl only cares about her tennis ball.
Natures menue freeze dried are good as they break up into tiny bits, also dried lung is easy to break up for smaller dogs

Somebody I know carries primula and gives the dog a little lick from the tube as a treat

lionbrain · 02/10/2025 19:50

Another vote for jr pate. You can cut it to size appropriate for your dog. You can freeze it. It is complete food so just cut down on dogs daily food allowance and then treat with healthy treats.

Cheese sausages pepperami will not benefit your dog in anyway health wise

Great ideas everyone, thank you.

I'm going to be no use at all, but just to say anything I'm eating is considered a high value treat and 'fair game' to my dog!

Ylvamoon · 03/10/2025 07:12

Does your dog like toys?
If yes try and use that as reward. A little game of tug or a ball throw has no calories!
If not I second things in tunes for licking.

signiffig · 03/10/2025 07:55

My dog was very fickle - so changing it up was important. He responded well to clicker training

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 03/10/2025 08:47

Goats cheese!

BadActingParsley · 03/10/2025 09:12

Stilton - but not great on a walk. But if I ever need to get a pill in her she's there all wide eyed and staring as soon as I open the stilton packet.

But the Barker liver treats are good. And handy when out and about and not calorific.

warmapplepies · 03/10/2025 09:26

Doggy pate cut into cubes
Cocktail sausage
Squeezy cheese
Bits of roast chicken

CharlieKirkRIP · 03/10/2025 09:34

Lily’s kitchen breakfast crunch is a dry food that I carry a handful in a pocket.

TheSandgroper · 03/10/2025 09:40

SandyDog would lose her mind for ham. It didn’t matter how small it was cut down to. Goats or sheep cheese is another one as it doesn’t half stink if it gets a little old.

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 03/10/2025 10:25

It depends on the dog, they all have their preferences. One of mine would visibly change gear when mashed potato was on offer.

For the ultimate low calorie free treat you could try fish skin. If you eat fish, take off the skin either before or after cooking and leave it to dry out in the oven (switched off after you've cooked something). Or if you have an air fryer with a dehydrate setting you could use that. Stop before it gets really crispy, you don't want it to shatter when you cut it. Cut into tiny pieces with scissors. Both mine loved it. If you have a local fishmonger they will often give you fish skins for nothing.

Home made liver cake was also a top favourite. If you make it with a stick blender and cook it in a shallow tray in the microwave, it's done in minutes and doesn't stink the house out the way it does if you cook it in the oven. I used to freeze leftover egg whites and use them for this.

I make sardine cake for my boy cut it up into small pieces he loves it and so easy and to make

ninjahamster · 03/10/2025 13:56

Ha I have a lab, any food is high value to her! crusts off toast, bits of doughnut, the end of a chip…

Seriously though. Cheese is her absolute fave and sausage.

My dog loves Stilton but I read they can’t have it?
