Nine months old Working Cocker - first season?

Hi,

I’m looking for some advice about my 9 month old WCS. She’s the first bitch I’ve owned so I’m a bit in the dark when it comes to seasons!

Over the last few days her behaviour has changed enormously! To put it succinctly, she’s become a nightmare. Normally she is super chill (as long as she’s had her walks and scent work etc.), but she now seems agitated, like she doesn’t know what to do with herself.

She’s started pinching things from around the house much more than usual (usually limited to socks!), and is so unsettled. I’ve had to put her in her pen a bit today (she normally only goes in there now at our meal times), and she’s sitting there barking and howling!

I thought she might be in pain, but I’ve had a good feel around her and there doesn’t seem to be any injuries and she doesn’t seem to be sore anywhere.

Is this a sign of a season on the way? Anything else I should look out for?

Thank you! (Before I lose my mind 🤣)

Nine months wouldn't be unusual for a season...

I wouldn't put her away from you. All my dogs become incredibly clingy when they're near a season and they get incredibly distressed if they cannot be with me. Other signs can be excess licking, humping, discharge etc.

Remember, if it is her first season, it's a bit like a young girl getting her first period - it can be quite distressing, particularly if they are young as they don't really know what's going on - so you need to be patient and understanding. Lots of people don't like that comparison, but it is true IME. Comfort and just giving them what they need are key 😊
