Dicky dabs - do they stop?

Sorry for the revolting title! Our little dog is a border X Lakeland terrier, he's 13 months old now, we are planning on having him neutered next month.

His nickname is "Dicky Dab Dab" because, the best way to describe him is like a bingo dabber, he leaves small greenish dabs on everything he lies on. We do wash him and he does clean himself, there doesn't seem to be anything "wrong", just normal dog willy smegma but it's pretty gross.

My question - does it get better with age/neutering? We had a female dog for 15 years before getting him and none of these issues! It's a good job he's absolutely adorable in all other ways....

I don’t think that hs normal- neither of our neutered or unneutered male dogs had that issue. I think a vet visit is in order.

Coffeeishot · 26/09/2025 08:56

Well our dog was Neutered end of August and he still shows us his "all" occasionally it isn't as bad as before but if he is uber excited at a visitor "it" makes an appearance but no smearing as we call it.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 26/09/2025 08:57

I've had 4 intact male giants and never had this. It doesn't sound normal to me.

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 26/09/2025 08:58

My last dog had this, it was gross. It totally stopped with neutering. Our current dog is a puppy so I’m not looking forward to the stage between puberty and neutering!

RiderGirl · 26/09/2025 09:06

The vet doesn't think there's an issue, he doesn't seem uncomfortable or lick excessively (maybe he's just a dirty bugger and needs to clean himself more!!), it doesn't smell, his "bits" look normal I suppose (not being an expert on dog's genitals!)

Just hoping he will grow out of it or that neutering will fix!

This is one of the reasons we only ever have bitches.

Sorry, no advice.

middleagedandinarage · 26/09/2025 09:47

I would get him neutered sooner rather than later.

I wanted another bitch! But when we went to meet them (it was him and his sister), the sister was clearly much higher energy/bonkers whereas he was a fairly chilled out little fellow from the start - so I was outvoted by other family members on the girls only rule and he came home with us.

As I said he's virtually perfect in every other way 🙈

That is why we as a family don’t do males. We did try it once with a westie and the humping cushions and the lipstick out most the time was just off putting. So it’s only females for us. Saying that, I agree with other posters, it doesn’t sound right. I would get him checked by a vet.

RiderGirl · 26/09/2025 11:11

Luckily he's never humped anything, he manages to keep his willy inside most of the time too! I'm going to wait until my car has it's MOT next week then get him booked in to be neutered and pray it helps the issue....

🤮

That is a mercy. I sometimes walks an Italian greyhound and his lipstick comes out every time he poops. But with short haired breeds, EVERYTHING is on show. At least you have some hair around 😂

muddyford · 27/09/2025 18:01

On my fourth dog and every one has had this issue stopped by neutering. Have also trained them, in the couple of years before the operation, to luck the blob on command!

Now that is what I call training. Asking for a friend, does it work on humans too?

I don't think my dogs wanted a human bending down and licking their blob!😁

I thought you had meant to write TUCK the blob. Awkward. 😂

Timeforabitofpeace · 28/09/2025 09:35

Well that will lower the dog owning population in the uk. Just yeuch.

Not helpful?! Why even bother commenting?

@RiderGirl it doesn’t sound normal, you say the vet is aware? Maybe see another vet at same practice for second opinion? However if it’s not bothering him then hopefully neuter will sort it 🙏

Think we went to the same finishing school!

RiderGirl · 28/09/2025 21:56

The vet just didn't seem concerned about it - having read up about it myself it doesn't seem like it is necessarily abnormal having read things like I'm going to quote below:

"A small amount of yellowish-white or even slightly green-tinged discharge can collect around the opening to a dog’s prepuce, called smegma.

Smegma is a collection of fluid and dead skin cells that helps lubricate a dog’s penis.

It’s a normal secretion in male pups. Some dogs—even when healthy—will produce a large amount of smegma. They will often lick their penis to remove it."

Never did I ever think I'd be googling and asking an internet forum about whether my dog's knob is normal. Enough internet for me!!

Our lab puppy had this a small amount after he hit adolescence until he was neutered at 1 year old which stopped it completely.

I've only had males because I can't stand the thought of the mess and inconvenience of their first season.

"dicky dabs" are a minor inconvenience in male dogs and not all have that issue, my previous male Lab never did. Plus it gets resolved after they are neutered (appreciate that seasons also get resolved after neutering).

RiderGirl · 18/12/2025 08:20

Just a public service update, he was neutered in October and it has 99% solved the issue 👍
