Chemical Castration

Has anyone used chemical castration for their dog? Did it make a difference and did you continue, stop or go ahead with surgical castration?

We have booked our dog in for Chemical as I want to see how it affects him before going the whole hog. Has it changed your dog’s nature, I don’t know what to expect.

Ive had dogs but never castrated them.

It made no difference to my dog which is what i wanted. I did 2 6 month ones then full neuter

Yes, we did. Very successful & a nice way of gently testing how he manages without testosterone.
We waited until he was 2, so all bone & joint growth was complete.
Had a year on that - cos we had to buy 2 x 6 month injectable pellet things - and then he had the surgical castration. (By then, his testes had shrunk a lot.)
Used an inflatable collar (Buster, I think) from Amazon, it was much more comfortable than a cone for him. He actually used it as a cushion for his head & now still prefers using a cushion pillow when he goes to bed 😆
I hope it works for your DDog x

Yes I used it on my previous dog who is now sadly passed.

It worked wonders and I continued on to castration after the jab with him.

It did take a few weeks to see a difference and it started slowly as the hormones left his body.
It didn't change him too much but he was less interested in marking and just peed instead.
He was more engaged on dog walks playing more rather than being too interested in marking to join in with others.

My dm uses it on her male instead of castration and just gets him re jabbed each time as he has had multiple surgeries on his elbows (lab) and it is very difficult to seperate him for recovery as they now have 4 dogs.

I plan on using it for my cardigan corgi once he is a little older as I want his growth plates to finish closing before we do it and I am unsure if castration is the right thing for him.

We used it with our dog to stop him humping but it totally changed his character and he was very subdued when on it. Didn’t continue it.

BessieSurtees · 06/09/2025 13:33

Thank you for your replies, this was my train of thought, I don't want him to change and it's a sort of trial for the real thing. It is to stop him humping as it has increased since he turned 3. He is a pretty chilled Springer who is otherwise no bother, well trained, stimulated and clever and I am worried about how it will affect his nature.

@haggisaggis When you stopped did he start humping again?

Just a thought on the humping - turns out that our boy had some remaining “learned experiences” of humping, despite having no ability to actually do it! It’s taken a couple of years but he very rarely does it now, thankfully.

Hedgestoohigh · 07/09/2025 07:58

I’ve used it. No adverse effects. He became calmer, nicer to other males, got a much bigger and heavier coat. Less energy.

Its worn off now and he’s exactly as he was before implant.

Humping is not entirely a sexual behaviour and can also be used by both sexes to show dominance during playing. So castration won't always stop it entirely and female dogs do it too.

BessieSurtees · 07/09/2025 08:34

Thank you, he does not do it with other dogs or soft toys, very occasionally his blanket, but it is certain people, he's quite selective 😕but consistent. He will stop and sit but he is soon latching on again, and yet other people he ignores .

Hmmmm, if it's really persistent like that, I think definitely worth trying the implant.
