So after all the issues I have been having trying to find a puppy i found a loveky breeder of poodles and we talked for ages. I arranged to see her this week with the pup.
Anyway he is a single puppy
so he has no experience of a litter
this means he has misses out on things that are taught in the litter such as handling trouble , frustration, negotiation, lack social skills. May be less social.
he is in a family of several older dogs tho .
any one got a singleton and was all ok .not an experienced dog owner beyond having one for 15 years.

I know two people with singleton pups.
One is a trainer and breeder. She kept the puppy, so it stayed with it's Mum and her several other dogs.
The other is a behaviourist. She fostered and hand reared the puppy from 6 days old. She has two other dogs to show the puppy the ropes. Plus she has a wealth of knowledge and experience.
Your problem will be lack of knowledge about singleton pups and the fact you haven't got other dogs to help teach it. I have no idea how easy or difficult that will be.

Thanks - the breeder said that he is showing no issues and the older dogs in the house have been teaching manner s etc
and that the character is now as itnis going to be ? Wd you say the character will be established now.?? He seems lovely and calm.

I have no idea really. It can't all be established or why is the socialisation window so important?
Yesterday's breeders were telling you to pick a puppy at birth, because the personality is established in the home.
Today's breeder is saying it is already developed at 8 weeks.
They seem to be making it up to suit their own circumstances to be honest.
My puppy was the calm one of the litter. That lasted for the three hour car journey home and the first half an hour in the house. She has ruled the roost ever since. But she's a working cocker, so I expected her to be lively. I know nothing about poodles.

How old is the pup currently OP?

Eeehbahgum · 31/08/2025 21:07

11 weeks
he came to see me - played - then he ran round with his mum then fell asleep on owners foot. I expected him to be cuddly and then I thought why shd he he does not know me .?
am i right ?
My old dog sat on my knee from day one and that is what i want.. but the breeder says that will come as poodles are lap dogs.
there was a lot of activity as they have several dogs
the pup was left just with me for a while i put it on my legs on the floor and it stayed there chewing soft ball then got off and fot in a circle and went to sleep
the breeder said it did that as it was hot.
all i want is a calm lap dog -
this breeder says if it does not work out i can return it
because she thinks it will work !
i did not immediately fall in love with him - but feel curious.
it is not really good for me to fall in love tho because with my adhd brain iy becomes all encompassing and the heart rules the head

i think he may be a bit energetic breed wise for me - but in some ways it may work as poodles are apparently y r shadow .
my lifestyle is walking then sofa ..!
I noticed he seemed v. V able to play hy himself - is that a good sign ??? I have no idea.
i know that i was so lucky with jy first dog and that i am absolutely clueless.
i am thinking maybe try it - the breeder is confident and supportive.

If in doubt, do nowt.

Why has the breeder still got him if he's 11weeks old? It sounds like she's saying what it takes to persuade you to buy him. Are the parents health tested?

Did you look at the litter of bichons I linked to on your finding a therapy dog thread? It might be better to go for a breed you are familiar with.

Eeehbahgum · 31/08/2025 21:55

SpanielsGalore Hi yes i did look at that link thank u - but u have to reserve a puppy before u see one .
yes i do wonder-she says she has turned 3 people away as she didnt like their attitude.

Is this one advertised on Pets4Homes ?

Camping92 · 02/09/2025 14:26

No offence but it sounds like you want a cat.

Or an older dog.

Its not really fair to get a puppy and then expect it to be happy sat on your lap
