Running on from our last one…

I won’t tag people because I will forget someone and then feel awful 😂

@Idstillratherbepaddleboarding Rory has reached that stage where he's all gangly. What a cutie 😍

@Aubrielle @Autumnpumpkinspice101 I found the same - dogs were worse with me (as primary caregiver) than with DDs or DH (when around).

The biting stage really is awful though - particularly if they do the vicious look as well as it can be a bit scary tbh. I posted a photo of one of mine doing it ages ago and, honestly, he looks like he's about to rip someone's throat out. He still gives the same look, even though he's almost three, but thankfully he just suckles now instead of lunges.

Even though everyone says 'the biting is awful' it's so easy to forget how bad it is. I've never been more than four years without a litter and I still forget how bad it is.

My boy also does the look as well and he will literally lunge at me. It is scary and on a couple of occasions he’s snapped at my face. He’s never made contact luckily.

My poor boy this afternoon seems to have a problem with his paw which we are unsure of- he went out for a walk this morning and when we got home we noticed he was constantly licking and biting his right back paw. Weight baring and everything okay and can’t see anything stuck in it. But it looks red and there are patches of fur missing.
He’s always been an itchy boy but the vet wasn’t overly concerned and prescribed him some shampoo. This paw things is new as of today though. He seems very determined to keep his paw in his mouth which I’m aware will only make the problem worse.

Hi all.

just thought I’d pop on and introduce ourselves. We have a 15 week old lab who we’ve had since 8 weeks old.
Honestly it is very hard work- our first family dog and my gosh it’s being a learning curve. I think the hardest thing for me is the biting- he is non stop. We’ve tried all the tricks and tips and not one thing is working. He gets sleep, redirection, kongs/lick mats, frozen carrots and not one thing is helping. He is awful with me in particular- his every waking minute he is biting and nipping me. I can’t touch him or play with him without him biting me. I move my hand away and give him a toy and he just ignores the toy and goes for my hand still.
He will be 16 weeks old on Sunday so just hoping this stage passes soon as otherwise he is lovely and doing well in everything else.

Beautiful pup! Yes the biting is very hard. Frozen tea towels have been my friend during teething. I’ve been finding discarded teeth so counting the days until that calms down.

LandSharksAnonymous · 22/10/2025 10:24

@Houndymumma that sounds quite young! Mine have all had their first season between about 14-17 months. But that's possibly because Goldie's age far more slowly.

Welcome @Autumnpumpkinspice101 and @JuicyDrop 😊For the biting, if you're yelping (which everyone seems to suggest you do), when the puppy bites I would stop that and instead try a firm 'no' and turn your back. @SpanielsGalore and I have had this conversation a few times (I think - or have I confused you for someone else!?). But we came out in a place where we found that 'yelping' actually seemed to encourage dogs to nip - it seemed to stimulate them.

I've always turned my backs on mine and said 'no.' But sadly, retrievers and spaniels do seem to be terrible for it - possibly down to their breeding/purpose. I do agree with others, it gets better about week 20 - but they will still mouth and on occasion be a bit more forceful than they mean to be. Retrievers are particularly crap for it. Mine spend their time suckling on my toes, or wrist, or any other part of me they can reach. One of them spends most of his walks with my hand in his mouth 😕

@LandSharksAnonymous the feedback from Basset owners is looking like it’s more likely around the 9-12 month stage, or even later, so that sounds easier seeing as we’re not recommended to neuter until 18 months. Some can have it at 6 months but hopefully not my girl! 🤞

Toilet training going terribly 😫

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 23/10/2025 16:22

@LandSharksAnonymous yes he’s all legs and ears 😂. He was weighed for his flea and worming tablets again today. 19.2kg, what a chunk!!

LandSharksAnonymous · 23/10/2025 16:37

@JuicyDrop it can be terrifying (i'm trying to remember where the photo of my second youngest idiot it so I can share it as a good example).

How is his paw looking today? I have to say all my dog's paws look far worse than that - they do tend to get a bit abused and beaten down overtime...

@Houndymumma gosh that really is early! A reminder than different breeds really are different. Six months would be horrible - they're still babies then!

@Newyearnewmewoooop Welcome! What are you doing for the toilet training? As soon as he/she wakes, drinks, eats, finishes playing etc? If helpful, I use food rewards and a 'cue' word to get them to toilet and used to knowing where to go. So I take them outside, wait until they do something then immediately say the cue word (either 'wee' or 'poo' - I'm a bit unoriginal tbh) and then offer a rather large chunk of chicken.

@Idstillratherbepaddleboarding what a little chunker! I've not weighed Eris recently, but I have weighed Twatdog and he is back up to 46KG! Diet time for chubby man.

LandSharksAnonymous · 23/10/2025 16:39

@JuicyDrop - attached below, a photo of Twatdog (who I promise I do love) snarling before he lunges to bite. All in good fun, he’s never hurt me and couldn’t be vicious if he tried - but the face is terrifying

Did you really give a food reward for toileting @LandSharksAnonymous ? God I never did. Just lavish praise. Aren't I a big old meanie?

Oh and by the way, I used puppy pads to toilet train my girl 😜Oh yes I did 😁I am such a rebel 😏

We’ve had ups and downs in that department too. My breed can be a very slow learner unfortunately. So I returned to basics, out every 30 mins when awake, then reward every pee/poop with a high value treat and praise excitedly. It seems to have really improved things although my neighbours probably think I’ve gone stark staring mad!! All they probably hear is me exclaiming ‘good wee wees’ every half an hour 😂 I found a high value treat a bit of a game changer, Bassets are very food oriented.

oh wow- that does look quite scary but I’m sure he is lovely.

I have a similar photo which I will attach haha.

our guy has actually been much better today - we got him a couple of new nylabone toys and they have occupied him massively. He’s still had his moments obviously but nowhere near as bad as other days. We also took him out on a long line this morning for the first time and he recalled perfectly every single time which shocked me as he does not listen to a word I say when he’s in our garden. So all in all a good day today where I’ve actually enjoyed having a puppy. 😂

@Aubrielle quickest way to train a Goldie is food 😀How else do you think I get so many of the little piranhas lovely puppies trained by 8 weeks? It's not my skills as a trainer or an owner - it's bribery! Brie isn't food motivated though, is she? That makes is harder!

@JuicyDrop I have never said it about my girls, but with twatdog I know he would never harm a fly (I know every owner says that). But not only does he not have the braincells to have a bad thought, his default if he is scared, or worried, or if anything surprises him, is to hide behind me and cry. But the look he gives, is scary. And it did use to worry me a bit when he was a baby, but now I just look at him and think 'pointless.'😂

At least you're beginning to head to the part where you enjoy having a puppy! Those first few weeks where you feel like you should love the puppy and love having one, but actually hate the little gits...they're awful! When you're away from home, particularly at the start, it's so scary for them that they will cling to you - make the most of it!

Your little boy is such a handsome chap ❤

VanGoSunflowers · 24/10/2025 08:31

Good morning everyone and hi to the newcomers!

@Idstillratherbepaddleboarding Rory is so handsome. By the way, I’ve ordered a knock off dry robe so will probably end up on one of the dry robe wanker Facebook pages but I do not care 😂 I think it’s strange people will take photos of what other people are wearing and post them online for ridicule. I don’t even notice other people half the time, let alone what they’re wearing 😂

On the biting, Pablo was relatively well-behaved on this front but did (and still does occasionally) have his moments. I don’t know if it made a difference but I used treats as a reward when he didn’t bite. So would engage him in play and if he mouthed me, pulled my hand away and said ‘no’ and then repeated. As soon as he didn’t bite, I gave him a treat and praise and he seemed to understand what I was getting at!

@Newyearnewmewoooop absolutely gorgeous!

Well I’m wondering how long it will take pup to adjust to the hours time difference. We were up at 6.30am on the dot instead of 7.30. Use to take my last pair of hounds about 3 weeks to transition! My mum’s cats use to take about the same as they had a fixed meal time. 😃

Edited

All our previous dogs used to need a while to adjust to the clocks changing too, but this current girl is such a big lazy arse that I actually woke her up this morning by going in to make our morning cuppa. She's only just eaten breakfast and it had been down for a while.

Nella68 · 26/10/2025 08:12

@Aubrielle we’ve just had to wake Midge up this morning too. Such a lazy bones. Those days of him waking me up at the crack of dawn seem so long ago!

I think they're a similar age (Brie is 18 months) so I hope we are reassuring those with much younger pups that yes, they do calm down a lot as the months go by.

Houndymumma · 26/10/2025 08:37

My girl now gets up to toilet, has her breakfast and then gets on the kitchen sofa to sleep it off for another few hours so we’re heading in the lazy direction which is good. Thats what my last adults did. To be honest, being a lady of a certain age I’m often up first anyway with the cat having a coffee. It’s been the late afternoon puppy witching hour that I’ve found hardest, I’m so tired by 5-6pm and ready to relax. Saying that, pup is calming down there too, thinking we may have hopefully gone through the worst of teething as Pup happy to eat kibble again and I found a few teeth last week. Chewing seems to have calmed down too this last few days although she’s still loving the frozen tea towel.

Aubrielle · 26/10/2025 08:41

@Houndymumma
Your girl sounds as calm as ours was, she was almost a mini adult quite early on.
Witching hour was the hardest part for me too, Brie's was 9pm - 10pm and we're oldies (sixtyish), so we were just about ready to drop by then. Thankfully those days are past (until we get another pup...😉).

Houndymumma · 26/10/2025 09:04

@Aubrielle yes it’s the later in the day hours I struggle with. I’m naturally an early morning person, but ready for my bed by 9.30pm and definitely in my PJs before that, especially in Autumn/Winter. Mid 50s here so not far behind you.

Yes hopefully I’m beginning to see more adult behaviour creeping in, especially as I’ve got a laid back breed like you. Still have complete & utter moments of pure madness but they are getting less. Last week was hard as her gums/teeth were very uncomfortable and that obviously caused her to be a bit more out of sorts. Puddles on the kitchen floor are becoming rare too, so fingers crossed! Obviously I’ve still got adolescence and teenage period to weather though so not counting my blessings just yet. 😆

Welcome and he’s so beautiful! I crate train and my pup loves her crate, she’s just turned 19 weeks. We use it at night as our kitchen is open plan and unable to make safe, but it was also good for short enforced daytime naps before she could self settled herself. She’d get overstimulated and I’d pop her in and she’d be out like a light. The first few weeks in general can be a bit of a shock, but things do get better quickly as they get use to their new home and routine. Good luck.

locket2009 · 26/10/2025 19:11

thaks @Houndymumma there so small it’s hard to listen if they whine . Hopefully he gets used to it soon and I can have my bed on a night😂😂😂
