Pseudomonas Otitis in Show Cocker

DDog has just been diagnosed with pseudomonas otitis after an ear swab. She’s a show cocker with very long ears. She’s five and we’ve had her a year. She’s a rescue puppy farm breeder and it’s likely ear infections were neglected in the past as she had one when she was handed over to the rescue centre.

She had the ear cleaned under sedation three weeks ago, she’s on steroids, has completed a course of oral antibiotics and will be on topical antibiotics and more steroids from next week. She’s also on an exclusion diet to pinpoint allergies but we’re only three weeks in.

As she’s young, the vet is worried about how long antibiotics will be effective for, so I’m researching alternative therapies and anything else that might work.

She’s a wonderful dog and deserves everything we can do for her.

I know nothing about this but wishing your dog all the very best. Give her a pet from me.

@caramac04 thank you ❤️

Our Cocker had this and the only thing that eventually worked was repeatedly cleaning them out under sedation and daily flushing by us. This took YEARS and sadly he ended up deaf.

@thaegumathteth that must have been so difficult. The vet has said a total ear canal ablation may be necessary one day, but I’m not sure I want to put her through that. I’ll decide nearer the time.

😢 That’s so sad but at least he had loving owners who did right by him.
It’s not the same but my old dog has lost a lot of hearing. She manages fine and fortunately can still hear the fridge door opening and the rustle of a cheese wrapper. Can’t really hear me at times …..🤔

Ha! Mine has radar for the cheese wrapper. Unfortunately it’s one of the things that’s off the menu on the exclusion diet, but she has dried pure duck instead so it’s not too bad 😂

No advice but just solidarity with you OP.

My 16 month old pup is on her second ear infection (yeast with inflammation) both occurring around July time. She was flushed under GA last year and as luck would have it, she's being spayed next month so we're doing another ear flush at the same time. What the plan is for 'next time' though... I don't know. The drops and whatnot just don't seem to work.

I hate seeing her suffer. She's walking around this morning tipping her head like a bear 😢 I can only assume it's interfering with her sense of smell and taste, too.

Is it just one or both ears?

when I was catastrophising in the vets, they mentioned removal of the ear canal (leaving her deaf in that ear) to which I recoiled. But she went on to say how they are amazingly resilient and bounce back so much better and happier than humans would be.

if that helps the thoughts xxx
