I think I'm ok waiting for my normal vets to open?

I don't think this needs the emergency vets...but wise dog owners of Doghouse please reassure me...

Emergency vet's here are owned by a PE company and are awful! Last time I went it was £400 for what turned out to be literally nothing (yes I am first time dog owner does it show 😂)

At 6:15 this morning Dog got a twig lodged in the roof of her mouth. This has happened before but with a stick-treat and it was easy for me to dislodge it but this twig is wedged in good and proper. She won't stay still for me to get a good grip on it.

She seems otherwise ok, uncomfortable obviously but she is breathing normally, no frothing at mouth etc. She is sometimes pawing at her face but has mostly given that up and has gone back to bed.

My lovely little independent village vets where I have a retainer fee for unlimited consultations opens at 8.30am... I think I can wait for them? I have teed them up with a message...

If she’s gone back to bed, go and try now to get a good grip?

Sevenamcoffee · 26/08/2025 07:05

I would wait for normal vet to open yes.

Vintagenow · 26/08/2025 07:05

Yeah waiting will be fine. That's not an emergency as such. Might need sedation to get it out if it's properly wedged in so don't give any breakfast (probably not up for eating anyway I would imagine). Good luck

AmoozzBoosh · 26/08/2025 07:08

90 minutes to go, it's fine to wait. Obviously if anything changes between now & then you should reassess.

OneNaiceSnail · 26/08/2025 07:08

For the sake of a bit of discomfort for another hour or so, I’d just wait for the normal vet. I know health comes before money, but with what I’d get charged for going to an emergency vet’s right now over a stuck twig, sorry but the dog would have to wait. If it’s gone back to bed it’s not in distress

phew thank you. I really didn't want the next wage packet to cover emergency trip fee on top of her spay fee on top of her summer ear inflammation fees....oh and a bloody groom fee this week 🐩

Dogs eh??

they replied to my mail pretty sharpish and said yes bring her in first thing 💕

here is the scruffy bugger up and staring into the garden (eyeing up her next twig? 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️)

Though reading paperwork - Petplan do cover emergency visits ... but anyway, I prefer my vets!

I know someone whose insurance refused to pay the emergency fee, as they said it could have waited. So I think you were wise to wait. I would have waited, as my OOH vet is 80 minutes away.
Hopefully the stick is out now and your dog is alright.

OnlyHerefortheBiscuits · 26/08/2025 09:39

All done! No sedation needed; amazing how a different place and being on a table makes them more compliant to the same thing I tried doing at home... 😅

No charge at all on account of my £25 a month vet subscription ❤️
