Lurchers

I'm just throwing this out for information because I've often wondered.
I love lurchers. Never met one I didn't like
But how do you buy one? Where do you find one?
(Not actually looking to buy. Just curious)

I have a lurcher…lurchers are the best dogs in the world. My dog does not have a bad bone in his body despite his terrible start in life neglected on a travellers site. Not sure where you are but mine came from Norfolk Greyhound Rescue…they bring Greyhounds and lurchers over to the Uk regularly and they go straight into foster homes. There is also a charity called Lurcher SOS…they have a facebook page I believe. Finally, many rescues have lurchers..they are often overlooked because they are not cute and fluffy but they are so gentle and affectionate.

HappiestSleeping · 22/08/2025 21:18

Good luck. I tried to find a lurcher, but no luck.

Visit your local shelter. Often they won’t advertise Lurchers because travellers come for them.

They are possibly the best dogs in the world!

I have three. Never a dull moment. You never know quite what you’ll get with a lurcher but I love them.

powershowerforanhour · 22/08/2025 21:34

Some of the game fairs have lurcher racing and showing. The Midland Game Fair at Weston Park changed and moved as far as I can see, but I imagine the new one at Ragley Hall would hae plenty of people to ask if you were ever looking for a pup.

I think lurcher link are still going for rescues.

Lurchers

I have two, they were abandoned by travellers in a pair… they are amazing. I’ve always been a terrier person but would have lurchers again like a shot. I do have space at home they can run though - hate not being able to let them off lead though they love their walks.
Please rescue though - they are really only bred for coursing (and very cheap compared with other ‘breeds’ or x breeds) and that really doesn’t need supporting. They don’t have the hang ups of street dogs or abused dogs, or even housed but not exercised dogs. Mine have travelled all over Europe with me and taken it all in their stride (and they are great with children).

Campingisnexttogodliness · 22/08/2025 21:55

1of mine was a 'working' ddog. Both absolutely fab off lead..

I have just adopted a saluki lurcher cross from a rescue centre. He’s just the most loving, adorable dog. He was with travellers who beat him and abandoned him with infected wounds. He just wants to be loved.

thistimelastweek · 22/08/2025 22:13

You are all confirming what I think

Great dogs.

Someone I know got one from a farmer. Kept his ear out in his local area. It’s a lovely dog but very large!

jojojoeyjojo · 22/08/2025 22:18

My dog goes off lead ..he never goes far and watching him doing zoomies is a joy ..

RainbowBagels · 22/08/2025 22:19

I'll add to the lurcher love. I have one (apparently-he's been upstairs in a bed all day and has only come down for walkies and dinner!) I rescued mine too. There are a few specialist ones round the country but loads of lurchers in general dog rescues. They are lovely and very low maintenance. I don't think I could have another dog but if I did I would only have another whippet/ lurcher/grey type dog.

Indecisivelurcher · 22/08/2025 22:24

Love my boy, he's a rescue from a local lurcher and greyhound rescue. He was picked up off the streets. We got him at 4m old as my friend was fostering him. We took a liking to him but he'd already been homed! When he was returned due to having a massive worm explosion we knew it was meant to be! He's just the loveliest and is 14 soon.

JurassicPark4Eva · 22/08/2025 22:27

My mutt was second hand on Gumtree.

We went and met her after a chat on the phone. The woman said I had been the only person to ask about things like behaviour, vaccinations, health, cats, cars and so on.

Then she dropped her lead on DH's feet, and that was that!

SilverSnaffles · 22/08/2025 22:33

I have had several rescue Lurchers over the years. Best dogs ever imho, but worth bearing in mind that different breed mixes result in very different types, so if you do ever consider getting one it’s worth doing some research about which type would best suit your family. Very rough examples being, Collie mixes can tend towards the brainer side, easier to train, but also more likely to get up to mischief, Salukis mixes tend to be more sensitive and/or needy. Those from working lines will be more prey driven, as will rescues that have potentially already worked.

Both the ones I raised from pups had great recall and were whistle trained, so could go off lead, but I still chose where I let them off carefully, as two or more Lurchers in full flight, whilst stunning to watch, can be a bit full-on for a lot of other dog walkers! Grin

There are so many in rescue centres all over the country, but also specialist rescues like Lurcher Link, Lurcher SOS, EGLR etc. They do get pups in (two of mine were very young pups when the rescues took them in) but don’t usually list them as available because they go so quickly. It’s worth joining their FB pages for early info on dogs as they come in. There are well known Lurcher breeders too, but why would you buy one when there are so many in rescue?

tsmainsqueeze · 22/08/2025 22:40

I had 2 lurchers , i came on to suggest visiting a game fair too, i actually bought my first pup from one ,probably not advisable but mom and pups were very healthy and it was a long time ago, not sure if that would happen now.
My second one was from a rescue that had taken a litter from travellers.
They are wonderful dogs , i used to take mine to a remote field and would stand and watch them run like the wind.
I would not buy a lurcher mixed with a bull breed , i would always go for the usual traditional lurcher combinations.
I completely agree with silver snaffles.
Good luck in your search.

BlueOceanFish · 22/08/2025 22:43

Best dogs ever!

On our second and he’s just the most loving crazy snuggle bug ever.

But you do need to get to know their ‘quirks’. Like zoomies, ‘bity face’, raiding the bins/work tops, etc.

BlueOceanFish · 22/08/2025 22:45

Oh and yes we rescued both of ours.

Our first was the most ridiculously well trained dog - had been used for lamping so had been trained well.

Our second was dumped as a puppy - had to work very hard to train him!

TheGrimSmile · 22/08/2025 22:46

Greyhound rescues often have lurchers

PInkyStarfish · 22/08/2025 22:52

One of ours is a Bull Lurcher. He’s big and powerful but has a very sweet nature. He was rescued as a youngster after a raid on a traveller site and a large group of dogs were seized.
