Dog peeing on his bed nearly every night

Recently brought home an 11 month old Frenchie. We’ve had him for about 3 weeks. He gets let out for a wee at 11pm and then again at 5:30am. He does wee both times. He’s not excessively weeing in the day so not concerned about any health issues. He is also neutered. Why does he insist on weeing in his bed every night? I’m having to wash and deodorise it every day. It’s doing my head in.

Don't give him soft bedding until it's sorted. I bethe washing and deodorising isn't masking the smell for the dog.

gamerchick · 20/08/2025 12:16

Is this the reason he's been rehomed?

Nextdoormat · 20/08/2025 12:18

Try washing in part white vinegar? Look up ont'net(lancashire). Supposedly get rid of smell, although house may smell like a chippy!

Coffeeishot · 20/08/2025 12:18

Get him a wipeable mat for his bed he is probably stressed/unsettled still he doesn't know where he is yet so he is probably peeing to mark where he is, again wipeable bed.

MauriceTheMussel · 20/08/2025 12:19

Would you consider crating him?

It doesn't i was dog blankets with a scoosh of white vinegar and washing powder and you don't smell the vinegar but takes dog smells away.

LandSharksAnonymous · 20/08/2025 12:22

Could be any reason for his weeing:

  • Frenchies are notoriously hard to toilet train.
  • 11 months old is far too young to have neutered that dog. Neutered dogs can also experience urinary incontinence.
  • He's now used to weeing there and the smell has lingered, so he will keep weeing.

I'd get rid of any bedding.

But this could be a long term issue given how many people seem to have issues with toilet training Frenchies.

What did the rescue say when you took him on? They should have reported any issues...(she thinks about all the times rescues have omitted key information about dog's issues...)

TootYourOwnHorn · 20/08/2025 12:22

@BlueBadgersthat’s what I’m thinking. Only thing is I have hard floors everywhere, I’m not sure he’s going to be very comfortable on them. You’re probably right, he can probably still smell it

OP posts:
TootYourOwnHorn · 20/08/2025 12:24

@gamerchickprobably! He has a few other behavioural things that are not ideal too, which is not ideal with kids around. Obviously none of that was disclosed to us. I think I jumped into getting another dog before I was ready, we lost our boy a few months ago. Its like the puppy blues but he’s not really a puppy

TootYourOwnHorn · 20/08/2025 12:25

@NextdoormatI’ll try that, thanks! I’d rather it smell like a chippy than pee

OP posts:
TootYourOwnHorn · 20/08/2025 12:26

@CoffeeishotI did think that but he’s not showing any other behaviours to indicate he’s unsettled. I think he may be too settled Hmm but yes, definitely worth trying a wipeable bed

OP posts:
TootYourOwnHorn · 20/08/2025 12:27

@MauriceTheMusselI’m not opposed to crate training, it’s more than I don’t have much space for a crate, and I honestly don’t think it would stop him as he doesn’t care about laying in his own pee

OP posts:
TootYourOwnHorn · 20/08/2025 12:29

@LandSharksAnonymousdefinitely. I would have waited until he was 2 to neuter but unfortunately he was done before I got him. I’ve had chihuahuas previous to this who are also notoriously hard to train but always been able to break the habit fairly quickly.
I didn’t get him from a rescue, big mistake on my part. Have learned a hard lesson. I honestly cannot get used to him peeing every single night, I hope it’s not going to be long term!

He might just be a little insecure at night, although I know my friends Frenchie has a particular pee spot in the house and the dog is 3 !

TootYourOwnHorn · 20/08/2025 12:31

@Coffeeishotdear lord… I cannot

@TootYourOwnHorn what are the other issues you've had in terms of behaviour? Was this a gumtree/ Pets4Home type re-home?

Coffeeishot · 20/08/2025 12:34

Just a bit of pre warning sorry.

TootYourOwnHorn · 20/08/2025 12:39

@LandSharksAnonymousyeah it was unfortunately. I shan’t be doing that again. He’s just very domineering, especially with the kids. Stealing food etc (which I know can be trained but if I’d had him from a pup it would’ve been nipped in the bud before it became a problem). He’s reactive to noise, like any noise. I could go on

OP posts:
TootYourOwnHorn · 20/08/2025 12:39

@Coffeeishotthanks.. I think Grin

LandSharksAnonymous · 20/08/2025 12:44

Oh @TootYourOwnHorn that sounds rough, I'm sorry!

Honestly, if you can't cope there is no shame in rehoming. Behaviours like that (particularly trying to dominate kids) can end badly (I don't say that to scare you, but because it's true) and between that and the weeing issue...it's a lot to take on when you're still mourning for your previous dog.

I'm sorry for the loss of your boy, it's always horrible to lose them but particularly when you have kids who are also grieving.

TootYourOwnHorn · 20/08/2025 12:55

@LandSharksAnonymousthank you. I really appreciate your kind words. I feel awful. It feels like there’s no good options here

Where is he sleeping? This is a classic anxiety symptom so it may be worth trying him in your room for a while to break the habit until he’s more secure. He’s young, in adolescence and just been rehomed. The perfect anxiety soup tbh.

DiordreBarlow · 20/08/2025 14:11

Could you perhaps get some puppy pads and put them in the bed. I know that doesn't help the problem but it might help you in the short term.

I'm thinking it's anxiety and as your dog gets more secure it might stop.

I'm sure you've thought of this, but a behaviourist might have some good ideas to nip all the problems in the bud before they become established habits.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 20/08/2025 14:42

Frenchies are notoriously difficult to house train and I’m afraid some never quite “get it”. I’ve looked after adult Frenchies who still pee in the house on a regular basis 🫣

However it’s still very early days so I would personally have the dog sleeping in with you so you can take him out as soon as he stirs to try and break the habit.
