House collar for whippet?

Sighthound · 19/08/2025 19:08

I need a house/ID collar for a whippet urgently (need to be able to get it by Friday at the latest as we are going on holiday). ~1 inch width.

Most of the nice soft ones I can find are custom made sighthound ones, and won't arrive in time. He is a sensitive dog and doesn't like wearing a collar much so the more comfortable and light the better as I know he will scratch at it otherwise.

I ordered a Snootiful Hound one off Amazon and it has arrived and is very thick and bulky fabric, not as expected.

Any recommendations great fully received. I think I might just have to make do with a non-sighthound specific one from the pet shop until I can get something more suitable.

House collars for whippets seems a new thing. I never heard of it and my girl died at 15 a few months ago. She had a regular sighthound collar. However, for the seaside I bought cheap Amazon ones (regular not sighthound shape) with a space for an Apple tag. It closed with a clip and made of polyester. I mean the cheap ones. Maybe that will do your job?

Does that mean a collar specifically for wear in the house? I only put a collar on my dog when we go out. He is completely naked Shock at home.

Would that be practical for your dog?

I always kept her leather sighthound collar on and she was happy with it. I live in a city so I was far too scared that she wouldn’t have her tag with my number on at all times.

i am sure you could keep those cheap amazon collars on as house ones. Don’t see why not. They are soft enough. I used them instead of the leather because of the sea water.

Look up website specific for sighthounds you might find what you are looking for: trendy whippet and Charlie chau are good. But the cheap ones do the job.

my dogs both have those - not sighthounds, just have small heads 😂

They’re fairly soft, obviously just nylon, but not yon stiff kind.

Yes exactly that although mine also has space for an apple tag.

I don't normally use collars in the house (I also have a greyhound and he doesn't wear one usually) but unfortunately, quite recently, the whippet has discovered he likes to run away and has been difficult to catch on the couple of occasions he has gotten out of our secure garden. So he needs a collar he can wear all the time (except at night or when we go out and leave the dogs at home as I would worry about accidents) so if he does escape again then he is wearing his ID. Also a collar makes it easier to catch him, he is slippery and fast! He has a leather sighthound collar but it's quite big and not comfortable enough to leave on all the time, although he has been wearing it as an interim measure on sunny days when were are in and out of the house.

Obviously we do everything we can to avoid him getting out of the garden, but we have small children and occasionally the gate gets left open and once a delivery driver left it open. So it worries me!

But no generally speaking I wouldn't use a house collar on a dog who wasn't a potential flight risk. None of my previous dogs have worn them, but they have all been significantly more chill than this one.

I managed to find a cheap Ancol collar on Amazon last night which has a traditional buckle fastening and was only a few quid, so I am hoping that will do the trick until I can get a softer fabric one made for him. There are some lovely sights bound specific websites that makes these.

Ah, yes. That makes absolute sense, @Sighthound . Especially when you are on holiday in an unfamiliar location.

I hate collars and feel so ambivalent about them. I'm scared that my dog will catch his in branches, fences, etc and choke.

I used to have a breakaway collar to prevent that hazard, but of course it broke away and was lost, along with his ID tag.

Hope you find a collar that suits your dog's needs.

ACavalierDream · 20/08/2025 09:26

Fair enough. I am just too anxious so keep their collars on at all times. I worried about potential fire or burglars coming in the dogs getting out somehow.

I wish breakaway collars for dogs were more readily available. You can get them easily for cats but not dogs. I had one for the greyhound which he wore around the house when we first got him. Don't bother now as he is so placid that there's no need, he is definitely not going to run (or even wander) off. He also lost it running several times as it was a bit big (small greyhound head) so wasn't really that practical as an ID collar. I had it returned to the house by kind strangers more than once after he lost it. 😂

I couldn't easily find a breakaway one small enough for the whippet unfortunately. But he will only wear it when there's someone around the house, and he likes to be close to the humans, so I think the risk of him hurting himself is small. I did consider a cat collar, but not quite big enough!
