After losing our beloved chocolate lab to cancer in March we were given the opportunity of taking a golden retriever/springer spaniel bitch puppy in July. Truffle has been with us for 7 weeks now, and is a delightful soul. Rescued through Wags n Wet Noses and initially looked after by a couple whose circumstances changed so they had to rehome her.

Due to a colleague of mine having taken her brother, and the brother sadly having died soon after her getting him owing to a blood clotting disorder, Truffle has been tested to the nth degree. What this shows is that she is a carrier for Von Willebrands disease but not a sufferer. She has a score of 26%, which is considered abnormal, but she is not severely affected (i.e. not 1% or below).

We have been told that % is unlikely to change much if at all, and that as a precaution we need to, before we get her spayed (not until aged 2 at least), or have any operation, do a quick clotting test and ensure we have some plasma to hand. Her clotting profile done at the same time as the VWf test was all normal.

We're expecting her to have a normal and long life. I was just wondering if any others have dogs who are also VWf deficient, and if so, how that has affected your dog?

Obligatory photo attached - sorry but she only poses like this these days...
