My dog is a nine year old retriever. Normally very healthy and very good.

Between 1.45 and 3.30 this morning she asked to go out at least six times. She went to the toilet each time and was also sick. This morning I went to pick up and it was all wet and soft, the vomit looked unusual. At 7.30 she had a poo, still wet and soft but with a smear of blood. Then at 8.05 she pooed again but this time just liquid and some blood. In between she's eaten her breakfast as normal.

Three times on two consecutive days she went into some bushes and would not come back. This is not like her and I suspect there was something too tasty. Then yesterday she went up a slope to explore, I looked away for a second and lost her. When I did find her she was very near to where I had last seen her and was looking shocked I wasn't there. I think she must have gone back whereas I went forward as was worried she'd carry on to the road. Just giving this information incase relevant.

I'll be ringing the vet as soon as possible but just wanted some reassurance or reality please.

'if she has become an eater of anything and everything when out on a walk, you may want to consider a soft muzzle '

you didn't need ' I was just being polite and responding.' you can just emphasise on the words I have now put in bold.

I didn't want to ignore the advisor that might have worked.

Anyway, I'm out.

@Lionness5 its not going to clear up overnight.

How long does a tummy bug or food poisoning last for you?
It’s always going to take time. It’s about keeping her comfy in the meantime.

@Lionness5, being honest @Bupster was perfectly polite.

People on this thread, and your vet, have given excellent advice. But you have admittedly ignored it several times - including giving your dog extra food that wasn’t chicken and rice. Thats why people are being blunt. They’re not being bullies, they’re expression frustration you seem unable and unwilling to take good advice.

I came in here to chat to people while I waited to ring the vet. I've listened to the vet who made me feel I'd over reacted as well as read what posters have said. What's the problem?

I don't give into bullies but comments like that make me not want to ask for help. when my dog is still unwell and even when I've followed all the advice, isn't getting better and it hadn't helped.

I'm not being a bully at all; I'm saying that I've been in your position and it's okay to worry. That's why you should ring the vet back, or your insurance helpline. Mumsnet posters don't know the latest in veterinary medicine and what's recommended for a dog that's not responding to the first line treatment of plain food. Your dog shouldn't still be struggling. You're not over-reacting. But we aren't going to be able to give you good advice, any more than you'd take medical advice for yourself or your kids from on here.

I have a golden retriever who is prone to bouts of diarrhoea if he manages to find cat poo in the garden. I try and look but he still finds it. Bloody cats!
He cant have chicken or rice so he has white fish fillets and sweet potato. The fish is frozen and pretty cheap.
I also always have in Buddy and Lola's Super Tummy Instant. Its expensive but works better for him than pro kolin.
Hope she feels better soon.

@Lionness5how is your dog doing today?

Pointynoseowner · 23/08/2025 16:21

I'm sorry you're having such a tough time of it. If you feel she needs to be seen take her ,you know your dog. Your insurance will cover her for any expenses. She could have eaten something awful that needs treating. Dogs are brilliant at masking, will continue you eat and go for walks even if ill. I'd take her for peace of mind. Good luck 👍

I hope she's on the mend soon OP, it's sounds like you're having a really rough time all round.
