Shit eating/ rolling - is there anything I can do?

pretty sure the answer is no, but I’m asking out of desperation after yet another incident today. The car journey home was sick-making.

I don’t mind horse shit eating, it’s grim but fairly harmless. I can usually avoid horse shit rolling, and if not, it’s quickly solved with a hose down and some shampoo.
Not interested in fox shit or her own shit or other dogs’ shit at all.

But, but… DDog is always finding human shit in the bushes ( combo of traveller families with no sanitation abd homeless people living in tents I our park :(

I’m sure all I can do is put her on a lead, but if anyone has any brainwaves . Love from me and the coprophagic stinky night mare …

Following due to my 7 year old shit eating and rolling beagle

No help at all. My dogs have found human shit on several occasions. It's absolutely rank and the smell is unreal. It's especially good when they then lean over your shoulder and pant in your face for the whole drive home.
Also, don't try a muzzle to stop it. The poo just gets into all the gaps and that's fun to clean out.
People will say teach a solid 'Leave it', but some things are irresistible. So the lead might be your only option. Or walking somewhere else.

🤢 one of mine used to do this on our industrial estate (Lorry drivers are just as disgusting!)
Only solution I have is avoiding the area or being on the lead.

I agree, it's absolutely grimm, disgusting and unnecessary!

Thanks everyone! I’ll just have to avoid the areas which are especially bad for it. So disgusting. Agree about the panting over your shoulder. I had to stop and put my dog in the boot yesterday as I could take no more.

I have the same issue because of 'wild' campers (aka dirty campers due to them leaving all sorts of shit, literal and figural). I avoid the worst places in the summer (especially after sunny weather) and/or keep him on lead where I know from previous experience it's an issue. He can smell it a mile off. It's disgusting and infuriates me as I pick up my dogs poo - they could do the same courtesy.

SpanielsGalore · 18/08/2025 13:21

@noctilucentcloud They're always moaning on the local FB pages about people not picking up their dog's mess. I reply suggesting humans pick up theirs.

@Testerical Sorry but I did laugh at stopping to move the dog to the boot. 😂 I don't know why it smells so bad. I'd be having to evacuate the house everytime someone went to the toilet if it was like that.

Not a solution to stop the rolling but a mud daddy (or similar portable washing solution) might make the drive home slightly less awful.

I'd ensure that if the dog rolls in human poo- to put gloves on before you touch/pat your dog. If you have any cuts on your hands and touch the poo, there is a risk of Hep A among other things. Rare in old poo, but a risk I wouldn't take. There is a vaccine for it too if you haven't had it for travel etc.

No help in stopping the rolling, but check the 'Dogs behaving badly' shows. There was one about how to stop her dog eating other dogs poo bags 🤢
