New Dog Runny Bum!

We have just bought a 7 month old pup. She was raw fed with her breeder, but we wanted to swap to kibble. The breeder gave us around 4-5 days supply of food and DH was replacing some with kibble to transition her over.

She has the worst diarrhoea I have ever known in a dog! I used to have a dog who really suffered with colitis and had a delicate tummy but this is something else. It’s just liquid. Not even mucus just pure liquid and this is the 3 or 4th day.

We stopped the kibble and have gone back to raw for the past two days I’ve been giving her pro-kolin. Which doesn’t seem to have made any difference.

She’s well in herself, or seems to be, she’s quite a laid back dog and it’s hot.

I rang the vet this morning and asked if I could bring her in, they said they have no availability (why are the vets like GP’s now???) but spoke to me and said they weren’t concerned, think it’s the change in environment, food etc. I know that’s probably true but I feel really anxious about her!

Just looking for collective MN wisdom and a bit of a handhold.

If you hard transitioned back to raw then that probably didn’t help. Assuming no allergies I would feed her poached chicken and rice until things firm up and then transition the raw back in.

Are you sure she hasn’t eaten something she shouldn’t and there’s no blockage?

BellaVita · 13/08/2025 16:21

It needs to be a straight swap I'm afraid, not gradual that's what has probably started it.

Give a little scrambled egg with nothing else mixed with it until her tummy settles.

Also, the kibble might not agree with her. Mine is raw fed.

@MooseBeTimeForSnow we had only started the transition to kibble, so replacing approx 1/4 of her food with kibble and the remainder raw. So it made sense to remove the kibble as the diarrhoea coincided with the introduction. We only got her at the weekend. The vet suggested rice and chicken but agreed when I said I was reluctant to change her food again if it was the change of food that started it off. She agreed it was a difficult decision.

I don’t think there’s a blockage - I’ve lost a dog previously to a twisted gut and he didn’t poo at all and vomited undigested food. Her gums are also looking bright and healthy. She is eating and drinking ok. I’ve felt her tummy/flanks and theres no sign of discomfort.

@BellaVita we’re keeping her on raw now.

Changing food right away along with a new home and family was probably all a bit much for her.

Agree. We did start with a view to do it slowly but clearly she can’t tolerate it. We’ll keep her on raw now I think. Just not worth it. She is marginally better this morning, still bad diarrhoea but very very slightly more formed. She hasn’t had any episodes of diarrhoea overnight which is positive. She is also brighter and looking much less tucked up. She’s eating and drinking well.

She really suffers in the heat - we have plenty of shade and I’ve got her a paddling pool mat thing which she walks over - but she definitely perked up both yesterday evening and this morning when it was cool which was nice to see as I was worried her lethargy in the heat could be a sign she was going downhill.

🤞🏻she continues to improve. This was DH dog but because I WFH I’m the one monitoring and worrying about her!
