Anal glands?!

have vets booked for 4pm this afternoon but in the meantime…

8 year old jack Russell, generally really healthy and no health issues. Had her since 8 weeks and she has barely been to the vets other than routine things.

the last couple days I’ve noticed she’s been frantically kicking around the base of her tail. Didn’t think much of it until I spotted blood on the carpet today. She won’t let me look that close but I think she has a sore to the left of her anus. Does this sound like an anal gland issue?

wouldn’t there be signed before the bleeding if there was issues?! She’s been totally fine. Also, google says you’d notice a smell but can’t notice any smell with it. Just bloody discharge mixed with her saliva.

she also seems to be urinating more but not sure if this is coincidental?!

It sounds like an anal gland abscess, one of mine had the same earlier this year, a sore to the left of the anus and bleeding. It took a course of antibiotics and lancing the abscess to clear it up, but we had to wait a couple of days on antibiotics before the vet would lance it as it was so inflamed and they thought it would be too painful. Instant relief for him once it was lanced though!

How’s your doggo doing now? Can it reoccur? I will let you know how the vet goes ☺️

Yup sounds like an abscess . Ddog has had two . Both cleared up with antibiotics. Vet recommended adding fibre to her diet to make her poo firmer to express the glands to hopefully avoid it again.

Yeah, it sounds like an abscess. Mine hasn't had one but he does have issues with his glands and never shows any symptoms until it's clearly really sore. I hope your pup gets sorted :)

He’s not had any problems since then thankfully! He’d never had any issues with anal glands before that so it was all a bit scary for me! Hope all goes well at the vet.

Thanks all. It was indeed a ruptured anal gland. She’s got antibiotics and painkillers and told to go back if it doesn’t go. Also she’s got the cone of shame to stop licking it and not happy with me 🤦‍♀️

Yuck. One of mine is prone to them. She’s had two anal ones and one dental one. All look (and smell 🤮) vile but a course of antibiotics and some painkillers and she’s right as rain in a few days. Vet can’t find a reason why she gets them?

Oh that’s not good. I’m hoping this is a one off. Bizarrely I have not noticed a smell with mine or even any symptoms until I noticed her licking then bloody discharge, the vet says sometimes they do go unnoticed until they rupture 🤷‍♀️

The vet never mentioned cleaning etc. she’s got a cone to stop the licking however is there anything particular I should be doing? I was thinking perhaps a salt water rinse to help heal it? Or just leave it?
