Hugh value treat recommendations

What do people use for high value treats? I’ve been using frankfurters, which he loves, but failed today. Normally they’re enough to tempt him on recall, but not today.

Cheese. It's the only thing that has ever worked for any of mine.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 07/08/2025 21:09

Cheese
Small squares of toast
Carrot slices
Slices of cocktail sausages

Drivingthevengabus · 07/08/2025 21:15

Agree on cheese. Cooked chicken?

What wouldn't he recall from? I've been working my backside off with dear dog on being neutral/not running up to other dogs (on a long line and from a distance) - it's hard going!!

Silverbirchleaf · 07/08/2025 21:25

Was doing dog agility training. First he found a toy left by previous dog, and just kept running with it. Got him back.

Started the lesson and he was obviously still on a high. Ran off, under the fence (didn’t even know he could get under) into the paddock. Fortunately no horses in there today (maybe they deter him normally) but he’s always had a thing for horse manure. Happily ran around the paddock for ages. Was strictly on the lead after that.

So disappointing. His recall during the lessons has so improved (was a little shakey at first) and in other places it’s fine. But today was one of those tear-producing moments when you wonder why you got a dog.

Primula cheese is good, and you can give a little or big splodge

Dogs are just massive dickheads. That’s why we love them (most of the time 😂)

Don’t best yourself up x

Fivews · 07/08/2025 21:39

Cheese is the highest value treat for us but I was worried about salt levels. I've cut cheese into wee cubes and mix with some kibble in a bag.
Seems to make the kibble irresistibility cheesy so high value too.

familyissues12345 · 07/08/2025 22:26

Another vote for cheese, ours can sense a babybel being taken out of the fridge from the other side of the house 😂

When she went to classes as a pup, I remember the trainer having tiny slices of frankfurter sausage which was like crack to the dogs 🤣

Keepingthingsinteresting · 07/08/2025 22:49

Arden grange liver paste in a tube, totally doggy crack. Mike also likes jr pate cut up into small cubes and oddly the cat treat sticks from Tesco - I think they are softer and smellier than most dog treats

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 07/08/2025 23:04

Liver cake. Kabanossi from Lidl cut up very small.

Shmoigel · 07/08/2025 23:23

Sprats!

wwyd2021medicine · 07/08/2025 23:29

Lidl or Aldi cat treats - the meaty soft stick ones
Pate

Ahh - I know exactly the feeling!! Hopefully just an off day 💐

I've been working with a trainer and she said to me at our final session (well final for now - I'm sure we'll be back as there more work to do) to remember the progress isn't always linear and there will be good and bad days, but to look at the bigger picture over time.

Ylvamoon · 08/08/2025 07:14

I second Arden Grange Liver Pate. Or anything else Liver or cheese, just mix it up!

However, if you are in for the long run with the Agility, I would do the switch to a very special ball toy! It's easier to teach them to work away from you.

You will have set backs and disobedience, in that way, dogs are like us and have the odd off day. But when it eventually all comes together amazing!

This could also be helpful (just check for the right size for your dog) :

Cheese
Doggy pate from JR Pet Products
Cocktail sausages
Cooked chicken
Puppy treats

I mix a whole load in a bag so everything takes on the scent of everything else!

I doubt any amount of the best food would work in that situation at the moment. Speak to your agility instructor.

Your dog sounds over threshold over stressed and literally did good old fashioned displacement activity. Could not cope so found something to calm him down at a distance from the activity.

What was the dog doing when they ran off? specifically. A new sequence, a fast sequence, a long sequence, a repeated sequence just started so really high and not thinking, where there other dogs around what where they doing etc.

Your agility instructor needs to notice how your dog is coping and break things down or change how he was working to give him time to cope with things.

But great healthy treats for recall and for keeping your dog calm in an exciting situation is JR Pate.

Coffeeishot · 08/08/2025 08:56

Thing is in that situation the run away was the reward you could have. Waved a steak in his face and he would be like eff off! so I don't think the treat was the issue. Don't worry about it dogs will always show us up when we least expect it 😃 Dh uses a whistle in these emergency situations and he has our dogs recall near perfect if he has to use it.

Anyway high value treats we use are primula cheese. Arden Grange liver paste, and we sometimes cube cheese or chicken,

VanGoSunflowers · 08/08/2025 08:59

Putting in another vote for cheese! And also place marking for other’s suggestions

SpanielsGalore · 08/08/2025 10:57

I make liver bread and tuna bread for mine.
I also use any roast meat leftovers, grilled sausages and cocktail sausages.
Primula cheese and licky mats are used for vet visits and grooming sessions.

How do you make liver and tuna bread?

@lionbrain The lesson hadn’t started when stupid-dog found the toy. I’d let him off the lead, and was doing the initial chit-chat with the trainer.

When we got him back, I admit he was probably still high in adrenaline and not ready to start the lesson , hence going off again. He was kept on a lead after that.

SpanielsGalore · 08/08/2025 11:28

Liver bread

350gms liver
1 egg
1tsp baking powder
1tbsp olive oil
150gms S. R. flour.

Put liver, egg, BP and olive oil in a food processor and whizz. Add flour.
Pour onto a baking tray lined with baking powder and cook at 180° for 20 minutes.

I cook a batch, cut it into strips and freeze it. Then get a strip out at a time.

Tuna bread

1 tin of tuna in sunflower oil
1 egg
Plain flour

Mix tuna and egg in a bowl. Add enough flour to make it into a bread like dough.
Squash/roll out to about a cm thick onto a microwavable plate. Microwave for 2.5 to 3 minutes.

This one keeps better, so can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container.

I add garlic (cloves or granules) when I make it, but some people argue it is poisonous to dogs so I have left it out of the main recipe. Up to the chef if they want to include it or not.

DaisyDukesAuntie · 08/08/2025 11:34

We have used

cheese - mature cheddar is a favourite
dry kibble - probably works the least best
sprats - like catnip for dogs, but smelly!

DaisyDukesAuntie · 08/08/2025 11:35

Also, we’ve had dogs (all gun dogs) who are less food oriented but would do anything for a tennis ball
