Vicious cycle of broken toe! Considering options.

My poor DDog has broken his toe for the second time in two years. Same bloody toe both times!

The first break was a running accident which healed badly; the toe is crooked and the nail doesn’t touch the ground so I have to cut it for him every week (which he hates!) and he has re-fractured AND dislocated the toe after getting off the sofa awkwardly last week Confused went to the vet who recommended pain relief and rest. He was walking around the house okay until today, but is now unable to weight bear at all on the affected foot, so I assume he has injured it further. We are going back to the vet tomorrow morning as I won’t put him through an emergency vet trip tonight to see a strange vet because he is very anxious and has a very good relationship with his regular vet, and an emergency vet would only offer the same painkillers he is already taking.

I don’t know whether to ask his regular vet to consider amputation of the toe? It is so deformed and twisted that it isn’t actually a useable toe, and I feel he will always be at risk of further breaks and injuries to the toe, and possibly other injuries if his gait is affected by the bad toe. He’s bored and miserable at not being allowed to go for his usual long walks/runs for six weeks, and already looks podgier as a result of not being able to exercise, which also won’t do him any good in the long run.

Has anyone had a dog’s toe amputated in similar circumstances, and did they recover well with no lasting effects? He is a keen sprinter and agility dog, so I would hate for him to permanently lose his ability to do what he loves because of a gammy toe!

I have no direct experience, but a friend has recently had her dog's toe amputated because of an autoimmune issue. A small wound about a year ago triggered a cycle of inflammation, sores, and hardened skin rubbing on the next toe, it was just not healing, and he was miserable and starting to have gait and shoulder problems. She was discouraged from amputating by the specialist, but it got to the point where he was so uncomfortable that she asked her own vet to remove it. His foot has healed beautifully. His shoulder has eased, his entire demeanour is back to normal, and she wishes she'd done it months ago.
