Post Spay surgery checklist - anything I've missed?

For first 10-14 days:

  1. Put mattress on a floor in a room that is not my bedroom and sleep there (she sweetly jumps up during the night onto my bed)
  2. upturn the sofas in living room so she doesn't hop up onto those like she usually does (cannot close the door, it's a "through room")
  3. put away toys that give her energetic bouts of joy 😢
  4. blocking boards at the ready for the stairs. I guess I'll have to carry her up/down ?
  5. Put rugs or yoga mats down on the laminate floored areas (as much as I can cover that is) - I'm guessing even a little slip can overstretch the stitches.

Anything else?

Sounds too much, but you know your dog.

My 30kg mutt lay on her floor beds for the first few days quite happily as she was stoned out her tree on tramadol.

My 18kg mutt was a street dog and couldn't be told so she was up and down off everything as it suited her. Tramadol didn't dope her.

30kg mutt screamed during her first post op poop. 18kg mutt didn't bat an eyelid.

I didn't cordon off stairs or flip sofas.... I did sleep downstairs with them both for the first night or two.

How big is your dog? Laparoscapic spay is two small incisions that heal very quickly. My bitch decided she couldn't walk in her post surgery suit, which was quite useful. I carried her up to bed with me for a few nights and lifted her onto the sofa. 48 hours of no exercise, a week of short lead walks, then back to normal.

Thank you, she's 7.5kg and my first dog!

Thank you, she's 7.5kg and my first dog!

Mine only weighs 7.9kg and is the first bitch I've owned. I did feel a bit panicky before her operation, but it was fine and apart from being a bit sleepy afterwards she was happy without her spay suit on. She definitely didn't leap off the back of the sofa after 4 days. 🫣

Our terrier was spayed 2 weeks ago. A bit sleepy initially but very soon jumping around as usual despite efforts to keep her calm. Managed to make several holes in her romper suit so that was abandoned after a few days. Main problem was that the rheumocam gave her a very dodgy tum.

She's gone in today! 😱

I was surprised that it's not a laparoscopic spay, they don't offer those at this vets. It's a full open spay where they remove the uterus as as well as the ovaries.

She also explained it isn't so much the stitches you can see on the belly that risk tearing, it is the blood vessel tie offs inside that need to not come undone. Makes sense.

Anyway... I'll hopefully get my (sleepy) girl back soon....
