Excited pup!

We have a rescue pup. She is brilliant. She is from a shelter so she loves playing with other dogs so leaps enthusiastically at every passing dog. She is on a lead currently so we can obviously stop her going over to other dogs but this isn’t always the case and she is eager to make friends. How can we make her be less of a menace? Would it be to get her to be calm when dogs approach and only letting her interact when she stays that way? We’re obviously also working on recall at home etc.

Don’t let her off lead out and about. She’s not ready

@Dixinormous that’s not overly helpful without any tips on how OP can make sure the pup IS ready to be off lead at some point?!

No real advice from me OP as my pup is the same as yours but there is a puppy thread running on this board if you wanted to join and ask. There are a lot of more experienced dog owners on here that could give constructive advice. I only let mine off lead when there are no dogs or people around and quickly put him back on if I can see dogs/people approaching. Luckily he doesn’t wander too far from me. Then I try control which dogs he does meet and how when he’s on the lead and praise him for calm behaviour. Actually managed to get him to sit nicely next to me for a few minutes the other day while I chatted to a gentleman who has a WCS on a lead (with the use of Kibble of course!)

Not what I was planning to do, nor what I asked! We are working on recall in the garden and in open spaces using a long lead. My questions was: any tips on how to respond to her over excitement when she sees or is approached by other dogs.

Thank you! I’ll have a look on the thread. We’ve just been to the park and I was generally able to insist on her having some manners if she wanted to greet the lovely big friendly labs and retrievers that were coming to say Hi!
