Dog is due to be spayed following her first season back in May. She is booked Friday 8th next week.
However this is also the actual first day that her insurance switches over to a new provider. (I am moving from Animal Friends to PetPlan) There's that 14 day window where she's not covered, so if there are any complications from surgery she won't be covered for them (or anything relating to them in the future 😧)
I can't delay her spay to go beyond the 14 day period, because I'm (possibly) away for work long-haul late Aug-early Sept (and we still don't know the exact dates and won't until the last moment 🙄) Making being here to restrict her activity/control the environment looks difficult to plan for. It would also put us just inside the 14 day window which makes me nervous, and I already discussed this dilemma with PetPlan when I was taking out the insurance.. so could they claim that it's just tough because I knew I was getting her spayed so soon? Delaying would only give me a week with her before I have to fly out anyway. Is a week enough to recover? She'd be with my mum while I'm away but mum's less able to stop her running up stairs and jumping off sofas...
Her bleeding started on 10th May and ended by the 17th. Is mid-september too late / close to her next one to do it? Is it dangerous if I get that close? Is it bad if I just simply wait until after her second season when the timing is less of a stress?
I read something about there's a 1 in 4 chance of 48hr deadly pyometra of unspayed females.... but surely not within two seasons? That must be for elder females with many seasons behind them surely?
I'm really trying to weigh up the risk of waiting until after her second season or going ahead next week and hoping there's no complications.
