How do you rehome dog urgently

StopitnTidyup · 24/07/2025 00:24

Everywhere says fill in form and wait but it's super urgent. I picked her up this week (rescued) but my kiddos are absolutely petrified of her. What the hell do I do?

OP posts:

Why anyone would think that having a dog for all of 5 minutes, that’s probably had an awful start in life and has had to endure a journey to the UK would snap straight in to ‘loving family pet’ is beyond me.

You’ve really messed up here OP. Others have given you suggestions on how to work with your dog but the tone of your OP makes me think the dog would be better off with someone else!

And please don’t get another. Most dogs, rescue or puppy, are hard work and you don’t seem to want to put the work in

Spot on

Simple answer, rehome your kids AND the dog. You sound pretty irresponsible.

Poor dog 😞

When we adopted our cat we had a month’s “cooling off period” with Cats Protection to make sure he was a good fit for our home (he is, although he did steal a slice of bacon off my plate at lunchtime). After a month we had to confirm that he would be chipped to us instead of CP, and also that we didn’t want to change his name.

Presumably most rescues have similar?

No; not they don't, especially the foreign/Facebook type rescues.

rescuemum · 24/07/2025 17:19

As you have only had the dog for a week it will not have settled. It takes a while for a rescue dog to destress and during that time it should be kept in a quiet place, free from children and noise. Please give it a chance, it is just frightened and disorientated.

In the South East you could also try Raystede, Barbie Keel, Last Chance, Kit Wilson, Lola's, Rescue Remedy, Dogs Trust Shoreham, Holbrooke, Sallipets, Happy Endings and Safe Haven.

Surely one of those can help you.

And don't get another dog.

Absolutely do not contact Sallipets. I have significant evidence and experience of then. It’s not a rescue - it’s dog trading. The person who runs it’s constant has animals removed by the RSPCA, has multiple convictions and court causes under the dangerous dogs act, staking and harrassment, breaching CPO

rescues do not have dogs removed by the rspca (twice this year). Dog traders who look for people desperate to rehome dogs so they can keep them in a hell hole and sell them to anyone do.

please avoid. It’s a terrible place.

Blimey I had no idea. How on earth are they allowed to stay open if they've been investigated by the RSPCA and also convicted of animal related crimes?

Take the dog to your council dog pound and surrender it. Poor dog.
Whoever the foster people were doing it on behalf of need to be reported too. It's not unusual for a rescue charity to keep ownership of a dog and it has to go back to them if you can't keep it.

I hope you don’t have animals either tbf

Thanks for the advice, @justmeandtheclan

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 26/07/2025 23:19

Do not take your dog to the local pound, it has a good chance of being destroyed by the 8th day.

This !!

awlgy · 27/07/2025 11:17

Have the poor dog pts if you are unable to work at helping him settle and adjust . There are worse things that could happen and every time he bounces from place to place will further distress him 😥 .

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 27/07/2025 11:25

Good grief, the dog doesn't deserve to die just because the Op made a stupid decision.

but I see the Op hasn't been back - maybe she is still reading her thread and contacting all the places suggested...

She needs to return this dog to the rescue centre he came from. She doesn’t actually own the dog it has to be returned as per the contract she would have signed

The rescue aren't interested.

FairKoala · 28/07/2025 10:31

The foster family aren’t able to take the dog back but is it a case of a foster family need to be found to take dog back and waiting for one to become free

Have you tried contacting their Facebook/SM page.

It sounds like ddog needs a bit of training and is probably too big and bouncy for your young children and the reactive part I would say was something that you have to consider is a side effect of what this dog has endured

The dog needs an older household and someone who can spend time training the dog and spending time getting them used to life indoors and outdoors on a lead

Also not sure if you have the raw hide chews. These I think for certain dogs bring out the worse reactions.

Can honestly say that my own ddog was the sweetest most laid back girl

Brought her a rawhide chew and she turned into a tooth bearing snarling dog very protective of her chew.
Took the rawhide chew away and once she didn’t have sight of it she turned back into her laid back self and it felt like she was apologising to us for her out of character outburst. Checked again to see if it was the chew a few months later and the same reaction occurred

Can you contact any reputable trainers to see if they know of anyone who is looking for a dog to train.

The dog has probably got lots of energy and was used to having freedom and is now in a different country trying to work out what you want given the language barrier and is not getting the exercise and stimulation they need and is responding with the only way ddog can respond.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 28/07/2025 13:04

@Teajenny7

BBC1 had something on this earlier this morning, and I see it again on the 1 pm headlines.

eyeses · 28/07/2025 14:58

I have read the thread. You need to return the dog to the foster home and not take no for an answer. Then they need to take it up with whoever they got it from.

While it is your problem the other people will just keep doing what they are doing, which is clearly very bad for both dogs and people - but they are A Okay Jack, because they have their fee and you have the problem.

Take their problem back to them. Make it their problem. It is the only way they will stop.
