Best insurer for 10 year old dog

I’ve just had the renewal quote through from my current insurer. The cost is increasing by about 25% monthly. He is getting on a bit, I know that, but he’s in fantastic health and I’ve never once had to make a claim. Is it worth sticking or moving, do you think? I’m worried that my options are going to be a bit more limited due to his age. Pet Plan only offered one type of cover and even then, it wasn’t really on an ongoing basis.
Thanks.

I’m with everypaw. They were the cheapest for the highest cover and when we used them it was very simple, easy to contact and discuss and paid to me quickly. They also pay to the vet.

BunnyRuddington · 24/07/2025 06:50

Have you got any “vets by subscription” nearby? We pay a monthly fee to the vets and if anything crops up, we don’t have to pay anythin so no need for insurance.

AwkwardPaws27 · 24/07/2025 06:51

Has he had any conditions at all (even ones you haven't claimed for)? If you change insurers, they are unlikely to be covered unfortunately.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 24/07/2025 07:00

I wouldn’t change at that age. Anything you’ve ever mentioned to the vet will be classed as pre-existing and won’t be covered.

Thanks everyone.

@ProfessionalWhimsicalSkidaddlerI tried to get a quote but they won’t start new cover over the age of 8.

50 quid a month is a bit of a stinger when I’ve never once had to claim in the whole 10 years of owning him. Guess I just have to suck it up. I’ll also try the vet’s, so thanks to the poster who came up with that suggestion.

This is really unusual that you dont need to pay for anything with a vets subscription. Luck you if that is the case @BunnyRuddington

Usually you may get a limited free pet visits and monthly preventation treatment eg worming few discounts on vaccination and castration etc but you will usually have to pay for any treatment r other medication that your dog needs.

That only covers the basic routine treatements though, doesn't it? It isn't insurance.

That was my impression, yes. But I’ll phone and report back.

£50 a month for a 10yo dog is an absolute bargain IMO.

ProfessionalWhimsicalSkidaddler · 24/07/2025 17:51

£50 is a bit of a stinger but I think that’s how much it is now. Mine went up quite a lot and I had to search. He is 8 now and we pay £50. That’s annoying about the age - I bet that’s common!

lonelyplanet13 · 24/07/2025 17:55

Asda have sent me an offer today to say they are now offering pet insurance, and after seven months they offer you £60 cash back x

AwkwardPaws27 · 24/07/2025 18:16

£50 a month at 10 is good!
DCat is £98/month at 14, & anything heart-related is completely excluded as a preexisting condition. She jumped off a fence & landed badly a few years ago, had to have knee surgery, £2000 - so was very grateful for the insurance then. A few days in the hospital with bloods, scans etc could easily run up a similar bill, so I've kept the insurance although its a lot.

Swings and roundabouts.

Our beloved 21yr old cat didn’t need the insurance until near the end of her life, and then it was purely to cover the costs of a vet home visit for euthanasia.

The opposite - our lovely rescue dog was adopted by us at age 4-5yrs, had been used as a puppy farm mum, wasn’t spayed, multiple health issues etc…Insurance started with Bought By Many (now rebranded as ManyPets) at £60pm for £12k per annum cover.
During the last couple of years of her life we burned through that £12k (she had a serious heart condition but she was soooo happy). Her premium went up to £120 pa during her last year.

Fast forward to now, we adopted 2 rescue cat brothers last year, 6 months old . Insurance is set at £3k payout pa with Sainsbury’s Pet Insurance. Well, more fool me, the small one had to have a major op over the weekend that cost £6.5k. Fortunately we can afford it, but I’m kicking myself I didn’t pay say £20 more per month for increased cover.

PS with ManyPets you only had to pay one excess per claim year, regardless of how many differing claims (not sure if this is the case now).
