Depends on what you mean by leave him alone?

My dog - a Lab - was fine in himself by 5 days post castration. Not in pain anymore, his normal cheerful self.

But I never left him alone for longer than 4 hours anyway. You could leave your dog for short periods of time but he shouldn’t be left alone all day.

Just while I’m at work, so normal 5-6hrs, with another dog.

I think that’s a long time to leave dogs, personally. It would be better if you could get someone to check up on both dogs but especially the one who has just had an operation in the middle of the day.

My beagle was absolutely fine to be left as usual 48 hours after he was neutered. Never needed a cone and he never bothered his surgery site.

lionbrain · 23/07/2025 08:13

Depends how the other dog is with y our dog. Will they play together, will the other dog lick the dogs stitches. Will your dog have a cone on to stop him getting to the stitches.

Lots of depends!

Pasta99 · 23/07/2025 08:17

I did the same as you - booked a few days off work and assumed he would be fine to be left as usual after that. Unfortunately when it came to it I wasn’t happy to leave him, he still needed the cone, was constantly trying to play with it, and would have licked if he could. I ended up leaving him with family for another few days. It’s probably very individual to the dog but I would try and get a back up plan in place.

tabulahrasa · 23/07/2025 14:27

It depends on loads of stuff, some dogs heal quickly, others swell up and it takes longer (obviously some have complications)

Some dogs are pretty chill when you’re out, some will run about and play.

Some dogs will make a real effort to get out of a cone and get to stitches, sometimes other dogs will be at their stitches.

Thanks. I know what you’re saying. They’re greyhounds so not that bothered about being left to lounge around all day.
My mum’s spaniel would go mental!

I’ll be with him full time for 4 days, then I go away, leaving him with my dh who has 2 days in work then 4 days off. It’s those 2 days I’m worried about

Likely to have one of those onesies on.
Both dogs play, but usually outdoors. very unusual for them to be active in the house. typical sighthounds

Thanks!… I’m trying to balance this surgery and my kid’s summer holidays. It’s bloody tricky!

I’ll just have to wait and see. And hope he’s chilled about it all! Thanks x

My dog was fine after a couple of days, he had a vest rather than the cone (he hates the cone and will just stand in one spot with it on until it’s taken off again 🤦‍♀️)

I think 5 days will be long enough.

AssemblyPoint · 23/07/2025 21:43

I was going to get the vest from the vet. Thanks. We’ll see how we go 😊

We found the vest rather a pain because you have to undo the poppers every time they go into the garden (in case they do a wee) plus it was a very hot spell right after our dog's castration. We found the soft cone a better alternative. They are made of velvet like material and much softer and less obtrusive than the big cones the vets give - but still stopped him reaching his stitches.

AssemblyPoint · 24/07/2025 06:21

Thanks, I’ll have a look

Mine had a cone, an inflatable collar and a onesie but he still tried to reach the wound. I had him upstairs with me overnight to stop my other dog licking it for him!

Dogs are disgusting creatures but we love them.

I think if you have been castrated you won't be too interested in the dog.

To be honest, had you left the dog alone in the first place the Court probably wouldn't have suggested that you be castrated.
