New puppy listless, bad stomach

We picked up new 11 week old puppy yesterday morning. She was a rescue and had been in the shelter with her siblings about 3 weeks (mum not with them). Since coming home she has been listless, sleepy, hardly wants to play. Yesterday she would eat nothing at all (I offered identical food to what the shelter had been giving), was getting worried she would starve so this morning I gave her a few bits of well cooked chicken by hand which she did eat. Today she has had runny poo and I saw some blood in there. Messaged shelter, they weren't very helpful other than to say she 'seemed healthy' when she was with them. She has been supervised/in her crate the whole time so I don't think she can have eaten anything bad or harmed herself since yesterday. Experienced owners: is this an emergency vet appointment or not yet? She did eat a bit of puppy pate this evening and hasn't vomited or anything else.

I'd be concerned about the runny poo especially with blood in it, also the listlessness is a concern. Moving puppies into a new home is stressful for them but I wouldn't expect what you've described, based on the 3 puppies I've had over the years. It could just be a mild infection but I'd want the vet to check it out. In the meantime, keep offering food (chicken is good) and try to get her to drink to prevent dehydration.

Just seen your pic - she's gorgeous!

Puppies deteriorate fast. This is an out of hours vet call in my opinion. (Note: I’m an experienced puppy owner not a vet!)

CMOTDibbler · 21/07/2025 19:41

Its an emergency vet visit, the poo with blood in it needs investigating immediately

lemondropsandchimneytops · 21/07/2025 19:44

Definitely take her to emergency vet

Anewuser · 21/07/2025 19:47

She’s absolutely gorgeous. I would be worried too.

Does your pet insurance have an online chat? Mine has out of hours contact details so worth checking.

Chicken is good to give her along with plain boiled rice.

I hope she gets well soon.

Vet

NigelPonsonbySmallpiece · 21/07/2025 19:49

I would say emergency vets, sorry. Pups go downhill very fast when this age.

Newfluff · 21/07/2025 19:57

Who was the rescue?

It just makes me suspicious that they are not concerned - that is not the reply of a good rescue, and the fact it has happened so fast would indicate the problem was already there.

LandSharksAnonymous · 21/07/2025 19:57

In a worst case scenario, blood in the stool & lethargy could be parvo.

Straight to the vets. I would not be waiting until morning.

Newfluff · 21/07/2025 20:00

Have you got insurance yet? Although a vets visit is unlikely to be covered so soon in the policy, many have access to a 24 hour vet phone line/video call which would likely be included.

LeastOfMyWorries · 21/07/2025 20:05

Another one saying vets and once puppy has been checked over I would be on to the rescue again, because their response to you was woeful.

You'd hope the rescue have vaccinated the puppy. But going by their shit response, maybe they haven't.

I would definitely consult a vet. Puppies can deteriorate very quickly.
Also, lots of dogs are sensitive to chicken and rice is a pointless filler. White fish and sweetpotato is a better alternative for upset stomachs.

tinyspiny · 21/07/2025 21:12

I’d be at the vets tonight .Hope she feels better soon

LoveSandbanks · 21/07/2025 21:33

We’ve got two adult dogs, blood in poo would probably have me taking them to the out of hours vets tbh

I tend to treat vets a bit like A&E and if we can treat at home (most things can be sorted with either starving or germaline 🤣)

But puppies go down very fast.

Lyn29 · 21/07/2025 22:29

This happened to my puppy and it was worms. Very sleepy, blood in poo and also the puppies stomach as really swollen. The people we bought the puppy from said it had been wormed but took to emergency vet and they said they don’t think he had been. Got the worming tablet and got better over the new few days.

Cadenza12 · 21/07/2025 22:32

Where did the puppy come from? Has it been imported? What happened to the mum?

tinyspiny · 22/07/2025 12:22

How is she today @notonacokebottle ?

notonacokebottle · 22/07/2025 12:27

Hi everyone thanks for your replies. Puppy is actually better today. She ate her breakfast and lunch (normal food), and was quite lively this morning though asleep again now. She also did a poo.which although still runny had no blood in it that I saw. Still going to take her to vet later today for check up but not as emergency.

@notonacokebottle if she poos again before the vet appt it may be worth taking a sample in .

NigelPonsonbySmallpiece · 22/07/2025 18:43

Guess it could just be stress of the change?

BunnyRuddington · 24/07/2025 06:54

Hope she’s still improving OP.
