Has anyone had a dog that does not want to eat?

Sorry this is a bit long!

I have two border terriers. Both are 11. Girl adores food. Boy has always been a picky eater and a bit of a strange dog. He had acid reflux as a pup and would eat grass most mornings and vomit bile. Vet put him on Omeprazole which worked for about a year then stopped working but as he has got older the acid reflux has stopped, well the grass/vomiting bile has stopped.

He tore both cruciate ligaments a few years back within months of each other and just totally stopped eating due to stress. Didn't eat for well over a week. To coax him to eat we began putting treats in his food bowl, which I realise now was not a good idea. He then would not eat food without treats on it, which progressed to him just eating the treats and not the food. He is an anxious dog and he stops eating if anything unusual is going on (weirdly unfazed by fireworks, storms, huge dogs or vets). Never eats if we go on holiday. We haven't been abroad since we got him as we left him in kennels for 1 night and apparently he paced up and down, crying, all night so we said we would not leave him again. We have just been away to Devon for 10 days with both dogs and I think he ate 2 meals plus treats during that time. He seems to enjoy the holiday though. Other than not eating he doesn't seem stressed by the journey/different location (we've been there lots so he does know it). Then we've come back to super hot weather, which again puts him off his food so he has just had 2 meals in the week that we have been back.

He has not been sick or had upset tum and before the holiday he went for a senior health check which included blood and urine tests which were all fine. Vet checked his legs for arthritis as he is prone to this due to history of cruciate issues - all good. Teeth looked fine. Heart sounded fine. No other issues.

He will still eat treats if allowed: biscuits, Jumbones, dried fish and Sizzlers but if I put his food down he will just walk into another room. If I was reading this I would think "God this woman is so stupid, just stop the treats and he will eat" but firstly I am not sure he would. He is so stubborn. Secondly, I don't think my husband would stick to the "no treats" routine. He's too soft where the dogs are concerned. At the moment he is on minimum treats (dog not husband), just a Sizzler before bed and thirdly when we have tried no treats in the past he gets a rumbling stomach which makes him jump so he can't sleep and gets distressed.

He doesn't like roast chicken, steak or fish. Wont touch anything warm, has to be cold. Will eat cold cooked mince and peas sometimes. I have resorted to cooking sausages which I know probably isn't healthy but he did eat 2 cold sausages yesterday. He actually seems afraid to eat from his bowl as if he will get told off for it, which we have never done. He isn't a rescue, we've had him from a young pup from a great family who just bred from their dog once. Our other dog isn't a bully. She is greedy and will linger by him, watching him eat so we usually put her in another room so he can eat in peace. Once he has eaten he seems ravenous and will want more.

He doesn't seem unwell but both dogs are not themselves and sleeping a lot but that it probably due to the heat.

If you have got this far, thanks for reading and if anyone else has a similar dog or any ideas please comment.

Put gravy on his food to encourage him to eat?

NotrialNodeal · 13/07/2025 13:59

Is he a healthy weight?

LazySunbedDays · 13/07/2025 14:04

Unfortunately I have no real advice just I feel your pain!
My boy was a nightmare when he was little and would only eat if handfed, even now he only eats when he want to, put his food down and he looks at it and wanders off (and is a food motivated breed!)
when he decides to eat he really tucks in and will throw his bowl around demanding more we now just go with this.
we think he gets bored of the same textures all the time so we rotate raw, kibble and frozen tripe mince, that helps a little so might be worth experimenting with textures
good luck!

I have a dog who isn't bothered about food. I can't even use anything edible to train her as she simply isn't bothered.

She will go days without eating if she doesn't fancy the meat on offer. I stick to my guns because I'm not running a f*king restaurant and her food is expensive and I'm not wasting it after she has licked it and sauntered off.

Her weight is the same all the time at the vets so maybe she does know what she is doing.

a couple of points that help me out:

  • I put a teaspoon worth in her bowl to start with
  • green tripe. It stinks but they love it.

My last dog (terrier hound) was like this. She would go days without eating. It got worse with age but she lived a healthy life and died of dementia at 17. Our vet used to say a healthy dog won’t starve and just go with it.

My current dog is a 2 year old border terrier and she is a gannet! She has had reflux in the past - common in the breed - but we fixed it with a lunch time and bed time snack so her stomach was never empty for long.

Will he eat natural treats like ears, necks, fish skin etc? They are good sources of protein and nutrients and can top up food. Mine has a couple a week to keep her teeth clean.

OccasionalHope · 14/07/2025 15:38

My friend sometimes has to hand feed his fussy girl to persuade her to eat enough.

@Newpeep Border Terriers are amazing aren't they? Thanks for all your advice. I'm vegan and the sight of them chewing on a pig's ear makes me feel a bit strange even though they do eat meat. I can bear to give them fish skins - they do like them. I've just come back from work and "Bones" (new nickname) was starving and snaffled his dinner straight away.

Have you changed his bowl to try alternatives?

Agree that hand feeding might be wise.

That said, how is his weight?

myplace · 14/07/2025 15:48

Have you tried little and often? And variety? Particularly if your DH is on board with managing the rather grim raw meat bits!

He could give him a teaspoon worth of high value raw meat at breakfast and dinner, you could give him something easier at lunch time. An egg?

Quality Treats have nutrient value, it’s not like a Macdonalds. A fish skin, rabbits ear or similar, have calories.
We have an excellent range in at the moment for … reasons. Air dried sausages. Liver cake. Plus jerky type training treats.

Sprats are really popular here too.

But variety is key.

Oh, and a lick mat or hand feeding. Kong with kibble and a smear of peanut butter.

Pigs ears are quite high in fat. I feed rabbit ears, deer ears. chicken necks, fish skin sticks and rolls and tripe. All great nutrients and no different to the meat he’s having so you may need to dry your eyes and pinch your nose 🤣

(I do get it but they are such good sources of nutrients).

Our similarly aged border has had phases like this (not eating for days, gurgly tummy, not eating if a change in routine). I think we have now hit upon a good mix of foods that he likes and he always asks for his dinner and eats it straight away now.
He now has what we call ‘posh chicken or beef’ ie m & s beef or chicken breast slices which are soft and easy to eat, with a sachet of encore.
In the past when he hadn’t eaten, we have hand fed him just the meat from the packet or pretended it was off our plates - cardinal sin, I know, but it worked and he would often eat ravenously once he got going, like yours and hidden treats in his food.

Have you tried different dog food?

Foolsgold74 · 14/07/2025 16:05

My dog used to tremble at his food bowl and look so upset. Tried everything and he only had really good quality meat and kibble. He had allergy tests and all kinds. Eventually started home cooking for him and he's transformed. Spins round now in excitement and whines for his food. Wolfs it down with glee. Every day he has duck or salmon or white fish, plus scrambled egg, broccoli, sprouts, apple chunks, a couple of raspberries, sweet potato and quinoa!! He eats way better than me! If I try putting blueberries or peas in, he somehow manages to not eat them! He has definite tastes! The egg is a big favourite though, as is peanut butter in a treat ball. You've just got to try lots of different foods to see what will tempt him.

deadpan · 16/07/2025 12:48

Have you tried putting food in a Kong? One of my dogs was fussy and grazed at his food. But if it was left out for ages he wouldn't eat it. I used to put some in a Kong and he loved it. Id refill each time he finished.

Mirrorxxx · 16/07/2025 12:58

Our dog is the same. For the first 2 years of his life we took him to the vets multiple times as he was making himself physically sick from not eating. He eats a bit more now but only every other day and only specific foods. He doesn’t eat if the weather is hot.
