How can I solve this - neighbour’s dog

We have new neighbours who have a noisy dog. She doesn’t bark much but makes noises whenever she is playing in the garden. It doesn’t bother me but it really winds my dog up. She goes nuts and barks at the fence, then the neighbour’s dog comes over and snarls/barks at her, which winds her up even more.

When they first moved in, I tried getting them to make friends, I’ve tried enticing my dog away with toys and treats, I’ve tried quieting her etc, but the only solution is to bring my dog inside. Neighbour’s dog is outside pretty much all the time and it’s getting to be that I can’t let mine out.

My dog is pretty well socialised, she goes on group walks with the dog walker, she barks when someone comes to the door but we can quiet her quickly. For some reason this dog triggers her. We’ve covered the fence so she can’t see through it but it didn’t help.

Does anyone have any idea how I can help my dog not be so triggered by this dog?

I have the same issue and havent been able to solve it. In my case i think its cos i have a big boy and next door its an unneutered male. Ours go ballistic at each other. It doesnt help that my neighbours never walk their dogs. I tried blocking off the fence, playing with mine while the other ones barking, treat party, doing impulse control work in garden... the list goes on

Not v helpful i know but at least youre not on your own

Surely though (in the nicest possible way) your dog is just as badly trained as their dog?
Perhaps suggest a dog walk with your neighbour, otherwise, put up with it and think again about training and socialising before you get another dog?

That is good to know. Mine isn’t the best trained dog in the world. She was then she became a teenager and has forgotten everything she ever learned and is being a dick about re-learning it! But she is showing no sign of stopping.

I never once said their dog was badly trained. She isn’t particularly well socialised and there are reasons for that, but she is well trained. She is a lovely dog, she is just noisy when playing. I don’t have an issue with it, as I said.

Mine is kind of well trained, she lapsed when she hit teenage and we are working on it, but she is well socialised. Out and about she is not reactive to other dogs, unless it’s her wee pals she is allowed to play with. Even then she sits nicely until she is released and she doesn’t bark at them.

Putting up with it means my dog can rarely be let outside. I’m looking for tips on how to reduce her being triggered by this one, what training might work.

To add, we did do a walk together one time at my suggestion, it was awful!

We have this, and we engage our dog in play when neighbours dogs are out. I have also trained her by mistake that when ever they bark and if I call her and she comes she gets ham. They start now and she runs to the fridge 😂

Whatever works!

My lovely neutered cocker spaniel despises my next door neighbour's male dog. Same with another two male dogs on the street. He turns into a snarling monster. Honestly, I think the only way round it is to let them out in the garden together if you are brave enough. He is absolutely not like this with any other dog. It is a territory thing I think, with him anyway. No advice except double up the fence panels and reward him when he is quiet only.

I had the same situation with my neighbour and her dogs. I had two Bichon Frise who were fine in the garden until hers came out then they all started barking! Mind you she did have in the region of 24 plus dogs 🤦‍♀️ We actually took it turns to let them out hourly!

We had this too. Next doors dog is very snarly and barky which sets mine off.
I was so worried I’d have to have the door shut all summer but it really didn’t take long of praising when she didn’t react (literally praising as soon as I could hear next doors dog, almost before she had heard) and she now just ignores him most of the time.
