So What’s your dog’s “vocabulary”?

Ddog (11) has a fairly impressive vocabulary of words and phrases she understands that DH and I were listing last night (exciting, I know!). It is I believe -

  1. Mummy
  2. daddy
  3. Uncle-bubby (DS9 believes she now considers him her uncle)
  4. Bubby (DD5)
  5. Leave
  6. Stay
  7. Move
  8. Eat
  9. Drink
  10. ”Wheressy is?” (Where is ..?)
  11. Names of all her toys (Beefy, Greeny, Purply, Fetch, Boney, Ropey)
  12. Whose-eeee? (who’s here?)
  13. Nosey (Nobody’s here)
  14. Do you wanna go for a? (Offer of a walk)
  15. Yumyum (treat)
  16. Tweetsie (treat)
  17. High five
  18. Roll over
  19. licks if told “I know you love me but you never tell me that you love me” 🤣
  20. Frantically panics and fetches toy to play if asked “What’s wrong? What’s wrong honey what’s wrong?”
  21. Charm choo go (“Time to go” for a pee or poo)

i think that’s it!

what’s on your dog’s vocab?

And probably more as I swear she understands sometimes when I have full on dialogue with her about what the plans are and she weirdly follows instructions mid sentence that I don’t know what was the trigger for her understanding

Mine is 15 months old, female, giant breed.

She answers to her name and various combinations of it
Mum
Dad
Freija (our cat)
Puss
Cat
Dog
Names of various people she's familiar with (i.e. family members, friends, neighbours)
Breakfast/lunch/dinner/supper
Kibble
Biscuit
Cheese
Carrot
Drink
Water
Chew bone
Ball
Walk
Wait
Sit
Leave it
Come here
Off!
Good girl
What is it? /Who's that? etc
Toilet time/have a wee etc
Bird/Horse/Cow/Sheep
Truck/tractor/motorbike

I could be here all day tbh... Suffice to say she is a very bright girl.

She understands whole phrases, though no doubt all the "experts" would say she's just picking out random words. Whatever. She appears to know phrases.
Baby talk is banned because it gets them excited and with a giant you don't want that, so we speak to her in the same way as we speak to each other.

But it is amazing how much they learn, and, as with young children, the more you talk to puppies the more they pick up.

We have a border collie, he understands nearly every word we say or the way we do things, it’s frightening. I even say to him to go sit in the shade in the garden, he gets up and lays in the shade when I’ve never shown him where the shade is.

These are most impressive lists! These are such amazing vocabularies - dogs are so cool!

OP posts:
Ylvamoon · 07/07/2025 13:25

My boy knows of what others already have listed.

Plus all the words & phrases that mean FOOD. From having a fry up to its time for dinner. He has also Agility & Obedience commands.

He knows the names of individual humans that he has regular contact with. And if you tell him to go find DC (for example) he'll trott off the find them.
He also knows all the toys names and will get them if my other dog fails to find them!
He has definitely the ability to pick out words from a sentence eg if I say to DH I'll take the dogs for a walk, my boy will be there tail wagging looking at me expectantly! (Even if it's not his usual time... )
Honestly, I think he's a spy like in the Cats & Dogs movie! 😆

Ecrire · 07/07/2025 15:18

Oh god yes she knows how to spot phrases hidden in a sentence. It’s like I can’t just discuss with DH “let’s go to the shops but then maybe at some point in the afternoon we can take D for a walk”. Dog will instantly perk ears and come and start asking to go out.

Now if we want to generally discuss things like this we use a new phrase “and then in the afternoon let us take our animal to the exterior areas” 😂
