I know I shouldn’t allow this to get to me as there are idiots everywhere but it’s the comments on this guy’s posts that wind me up. You’ll probably know who I’m referring to if you’re on TikTok and like me have been searching for puppy/dogs.

Anyway this guy has 10 dogs, 2 different breeds. He currently has one bitch with a litter and at least one if not two pregnant. Basically a BYB doing it for the money. He has some sort of double dapple colour thing going on so I suspect no health tests/KC registered. He did a house show and the dog were all sitting in crates plus one of the dogs had a prong collar on.

The annoying thing is the comments about him loving his dogs, how well they are looked after etc, does he have any advice about breeding as some other idiot is just about to have puppies and doesn’t have a clue. If he truly loved his dogs he wouldn’t be trying to make as much money as he can from them. Rant over.

No one who loves dogs uses a prong collar either

No, you're not being unreasonable.

Finding a good breeder, who cares for their dogs and breeds healthy happy puppies who will have the best start to life possible, is the bare minimum any potential dog owner should do. And it's not hard.

As someone currently up to their eyeballs in furry little weirdos at the moment, I can say with my hand on my heart, no one is actually capable of giving more than one litter of puppies a year adequate care and attention. And that many dogs means churning out puppies probably every few months, bitches being dumped when they're no longer 'useful' and awful living conditions in the meantime.

But, as with so many things, people view dogs as fashion accessories and think a snazzy instagram or website is the hallmark of a good breeder. They care more about keeping up appearances and getting their defective dog quickly than they do about animal care and ethics.

I totally agree as my little land shark lies beside me. When looking for a good breeder I rejected about 10 as I saw red flags almost immediately, things like “oh I have no puppies left but I’m breeding again in January and October” “ you can come and chose a pup tomorrow” “I didn’t bother with health tests or KC regs”

The breeder I did go with grilled me as she should, this is only her second ever litter and she said the same it’s exhausting. I personally couldn’t do it. The responsibility would be too much for me finding homes for all the pups. Pup has every health test, a 5 gen pedigree carefully chosen stud to ensure a good inbreeding coefficient, a contract that states she will return to the breeder first and breeding restrictions. Basic things.
