I've found a second lump on my dog.

My dog has very recently had a tumour removed from his paw. I opted not to have the lump biopsied as the op itself and subsequent aftercare have already cost more than I can comfortably afford.

Because of where the lump was, it couldn't be fully stitched, and so the wound was having to be dressed every few days and latterly he had a cone, which the poor boy was finally freed from on Friday.

Last night I found another lump on his leg. I haven't phoned the vet yet as I won't be able to talk to them without breaking down, but I really can't envisage a positive outcome and am completely beside myself.

What breed and age is your dog? Some breeds are prone to lumps when they reach a certain age, they won’t necessarily be cancerous

JohnnyMarr · 02/07/2025 15:19

Thanks so much for replying @Eggsandavocado He's a poodle X (I think labrador or retriever) and he's 12.

I know I'm going to have to have it aspirated, but I've got so much going on already, and he's such a sweet boy, that if it's not a great prognosis I'm just going to be in bits.

We have two elderly dogs, both have lumps. Vets say they are just fatty lumps and would be more risky to put an elderly dog through the anaesthetic, they have both had them at least 3 years. Dogs are 16 x

Thanks @MyCoralHedgehog that's really comforting to hear. I'm ridiculously "glass half empty" and my mind has instantly jumped to the worst possible scenario, but I shall try to manifest a positive outcome for him. Quite apart from anything else, he's really intuitive and I think my panic is stressing him out too.

What does the lump feel like? Our dog had several fatty lumps during her later years and they caused no problems (you could move them and they just felt gristly!)

My 8 year old dog has many lumps. Some have been removed as they were causing pain where they were and we had them analysed and found to be benign. The others that don’t affect his life we just leave alone and have never even bothered to have them biopsied as I personally feel that unless they cause suffering then I wouldn’t remove them benign or not.

I second this. I have an 8 year old Bichon who has lumps and she’s very happy in herself, eating fine ect. Unless they are causing pain or he seems poorly, let them be.

Thanks for all your replies, they've really helped me to paint a slightly less bleak picture in my mind!

Fortunately, he seems absolutely fine in himself, so I will, as suggested, leave things alone unless he starts to seem unwell.

I’m another with a dog with several lumps. Had one removed at one point and biopsied and all was fine. Vet has left the rest as fatty lumps. She’s a labradoodle.

I would want to get it checked out. Could be all sorts of things.
