Advocating for my dog at the vet

I’m very angry with my vet.
Money is tight, and I can’t afford to go to the vet for a number of consultations that lead nowhere, would rather have one and her at least be diagnosed and prescribed something.
she has breathing issues. I have been to the vet with my dog 3 or 4 separate times in the past year about separate issues other than her breathing and have mentioned her breathing during those visits.
At the vets she freezes and becomes very still, timid and quiet. She hides her pain completely.
Outside the home she is very reactive, bold, aggressive.
At home she is a normal dog, but clearly in pain.
They have said that because they have not personally seen her wheezing, coughing, honking, or any of the other symptoms she has (and they downplay any issues I describe), they will not do anything.
I showed them some photos and videos, and they downplayed it.
at night she gets out of her bed and lies in the corner, is always licking her paws, biting them until they bleed, excessive swallowing, honking after eating, honking like she can’t breathe during the night and at random times. She looks very sad almost all of the time and is clearly in a lot of pain. She eats less.
She has been deteriorating, and I feel like it’s could potentially be prevented if the vet listens to me. But they haven’t been, and it’s making me really angry, whilst I have to see her get worse each day.

Take her to a different vet? Also, keep filming when she is doing those things. Your vet sounds crap.

Is the honking reverse sneezing? You Tube etc has videos of that. It can be allergens.

Have you tried Piriton?

Have you looked at eliminating common allergens for dogs from her lifestyle? Wheat, grains, chicken, dairy dust etc?

You could also try some paracetamol, but you'd want advice on dose to her size before you do that.

A few things like that could help pretty quickly if it's allergies.

Why the hell have you jot sought a second opinion from a different vet??!!

My vets have never questioned me when I described the seizures our late dog was having. At first they thought it was something innocuous but several more and a change in personality combined with videos of the events and it was agreed that whatever it was was serious and not recoverable and so dog was it's.

What sort of diet do you feed her?

When my cat had similar systems inc. the occasional full on asthma attack, the vet suggested putting him on steroids permanently. 🤦🏻‍♀️

My solution was to feed him grain free food and I bought mostly Swedish brands via Zooplus.

The asthma and breathing issues went away and he lived a long and happy life.

I now feed my animals high quality pet foods supplemented with tinned fish etc. and mostly freshly cooked meat and veg for the dog.

I’d try a different vet, but also half a piraton once a day and half a paracetamol twice a day was prescribed for my cocker spaniel (14kg weight dog).

MaxineHarper · 24/06/2025 23:19

What breed is she? Is she a brachycephalic breed?

MyLov · 25/06/2025 00:48

I don’t understand why you keep going back to this vet. Go and see a different one.
