A dog toy like a flowerpot but not a flowerpot...?

DDog has a real thing for flowerpots. She just loves picking them up so they're over her face and running round like a twat with them. They make her So Very Happy.

But they're sharp and pokey, and also they're mine, and sometimes they have flowers in, so she can't have them.

Any ideas for a substitute that she could run round with to her heart's content?

Pic of the silly creature for tax 🤣

It’ll be a complete waste of money
you just need to stop this behaviour
it’ll take a bit of time but if she’s conducive to even vaguely being trained… she’ll get it soon enough (a squirt from the water gun whenever she picks up worked a treat here for similar naughty behaviour in the garden!)

ETA - dog toy flower pot / slow feeder. I'd coat the inside with peanut butter then freeze.

Thanks but I didn't ask for training advice especially from someone who thinks a water gun is an appropriate training method

Our friends dog has a rubber plant pot toy which could work if it's the shape she likes as apposed to the feel of the plastic?

Bamaluz · 23/06/2025 19:16

A flowerpot shaped woven basket, or even a cardboard box?
There are a few dog toys on amazon that she might like.

How about a licky mat yoggie pot. Flower pot shape, but rubber you can fill with yoghurt, treats, peanut butter. They are really good.

tizwozliz · 23/06/2025 19:25

I don't think you'll find any substitute that compares. Plastic bottles (big 2l ones) with the lids removed seem to elicit the same sort of play with my black labs. Although they're quite fond of the watering can too.

Honestly I just give mine the cheapo plastic flowerpots that plants come in (you can often get them free from garden centres), and put the good ones behind puppy pens. He has so much fun shredding them, and running round with them stuck on his head.

I do the same. I just make sure I’m always supervising so if the plastic splits I can remove them before any sharp edges come into play.

They are really good for allsorts of play. They seem to last well too. Hope she enjoys her birthday present!

We have yoggie pots, my dogs occasionally have a frozen snack in them but they're of no play interest at all.

babasaclover · 24/06/2025 17:53

No suggestions, I’m afraid but oh my God, what a beautiful dog and yes get her those moments of happiness :-)

I bet she would like a bucket as well

Yes, my dog has a couple and she’ll eat out of them but she won’t play with them at all. Worth a try though.

I suppose, like so many other things, it depends on the dog. DDog is so obsessed with flowerpots that I suspect she will be thrilled to have one all of her own!

But will your dog consider it to be a flowerpot? I spent a lot of time trying to find a toy that would replicate the items my dog liked to steal (hairbrushes, crochet hooks, knives, basically things with rubbery handles). Never succeeded!

It's probably worth a go, and you're likely to get some use out of it either way but might not be the magic solution.

Bupster · 25/06/2025 13:09

Same here - I think the thing he loved about flowerpots was that he could shred them, though he did steal and try to eat a small metal watering can too, which is also now his. That looked very funny stuck on his head.

muddyford · 27/06/2025 11:52

All my Labs have loved flowerpots. Look for the ones of rubbery black plastic rather than the thin brittle ones.

NamechangeJunebaby · 29/06/2025 17:46

My cocker spaniel is obsessed with pots. Only the plastic ones. Of all her birthday and Christmas pressies her favourite is the four pack of v large tough tomato planters I bought her two years ago from Homebase. I think they were a fiver? They’re big enough for her to pick up and stick her whole head in. And she can wrestle with them and pick them up without them getting shredded and sharp. I do check them as if they start to look ripped or cracked they’ll be straight in the bin. But if you’re supervising her play then these might work.

plant pots are brilliant for doing tasty treasure hunts in the garden and house when it’s too hot to go for a day time walk. I pop her favourite treats under and hide them round the home - she loves it!
