First Aid items for first holiday with pup

Afternoon all

we’re off to the east coast in a few weeks with pooch who will be 7 months old by then. He’s a border terrier.

There are several supermarkets and a few pet shops close by but I’m thinking a few first aid items could be helpful? I’ve not got any of this stuff in at home yet so probably handy to have anyway.

What may be most useful to have with us? So far I’m thinking balm for sore pads, antiseptic spray, tick remover?

Or am I being too PFB about this?!!! He’s our first pup 😁

Honestly, my dog is 8 years now and has never needed first aid. Pure money making racket, if summits up that's what vets are for.

You are fortunate never to have needed first aid, but when you're out and about, potentially miles from a vet, then a simple first aid kit can be potentially life saving, and certainly more comfortable for the animal until you can reach a vet.

I could buy all the items in my first aid kit for less than the cost of a vet consult. If you can treat minor ailments yourself you will save a fortune.

Our vet recommends the following:

Cannigest or other probiotic
Water carrier and bowl
Vet wrap for any little cuts
Sticky tape
Pair of baby socks in case you need to protect a sore paw
Tick remover
Microfibre towel

Been handy on many an occasions. I also like to know where the nearest vet is.
Your pups usual food and a basket or blanket.

I keep a first aid kit in the car. So far only used on me when I lacerated myself on brambles and bled copiously.

It contains
Saline pods, for washing out eyes and wounds
Tweezers
Wire cutters
Wound powder
Styptic pencil
Hypafix
All the makings of a proper bandaged dressing, including the conforming bandage that vets use and a pair of scissors
Wound wipes
Wet wipes
Latex gloves
Plasters (for the humans)
It all fits into a small sponge bag and it's a cut-down version of the much bigger kit we have at home for torn ears, cut pads, gashes from wire etc.

All in all it has probably saved us a couple of hundred quid.

Quite. Two torn ears, two cut pads and a couple of puncture wounds that the vet never needed to see.

I should add that I've got a tick remover on my keyring.

Great post. I have a doggie first aid kit at home and always take it away with me. Otherwise as soon as I get away a problem will crop up and I’ll be searching for items I already have at home. It consists of

hibiscrub for cleaning wounds or any kind of skin issue like hot spots
leucillin spray also for wounds
otodex for itchy ears - lab gets this a lot
cold tea bags for itchy eyes
(salt water is an ok replacement for above four if you are stuck)
tick remover
piriton - I take these with me on every dog walk in case of snake bite bits also good for insect bites or stings
I don’t have pro kolin in but it’s v good if your dog has tummy issues

I barely ever go to the vet.

Can I ask what piriton? As in not the human one? 😁

Yes the human one is fine for dogs. If they get an adder bite it can start to reduce inflammation while you get to the vet.
