Any vets here? Does it look ok? I’ve just removed a tick from my dogs leg. I think I got it all out it was still wriggling.

Not a vet, but if it still had its wiggling legs, it should be OK. Some dogs are more reactive at the site. Do you normally use Tick protection?

LeaAndDer · 20/06/2025 20:20

Yes I religiously use advocate flea and tick spot on solution

In that case, I would not worry. They are pretty effective in neutralising the little blighters.

i think you caught it very quickly after it attached , and that’s why your dog has this reaction.

Keep an eye on the site, but I think it will be calm by morning - in my experience.

Thanks, he’s only been in the garden last couple of days as it’s been too hot to walk him, but stupidly I took him late afternoon today across the field near me which had just been cut for hay. That’s where he picked it up from I expect.

Advocate doesn’t provide tick cover.

Beautyfadesdumbisforever · 21/06/2025 15:28

that doesn’t look like a tick it looks more like a wart. By the time you can easily see a tick it looks brown because it is feeding and filling up with blood, the tick sac is also smooth that looks knobbly.

Beautyfadesdumbisforever · 21/06/2025 15:32

Sorry skipped over where you said you had just removed a tick. If you got the legs out and it’s wriggling you have got it supper quick, it will be fine.

Advocate doesn’t provide tick cover.

Really? I was under the impression it did. I need to check this out.

Just found this:

Does Advocate Kill TicksYes, Advocate kills ticks. Advocate is a tick and flea preventative for dogs that contain the active ingredient imidacloprid. Imidacloprid belongs to a class of insecticides called neonicotinoids, which are known to be highly toxic to insects.
When used as directed, Advocate is safe and effective at preventing ticks and fleas from attaching and feeding on dogs.

My Google search says Advocate does not cover ticks. You need to use Advantix.

LeaAndDer · 21/06/2025 20:59

We’ll have to disagree as my google said as below. Maybe there’s a vet on here who can say which is correct. I’ve had dogs for years, always used Advocate, this was the first time had to deal with a tick.

We use bravecto which definitely kills fleas and ticks.

I think it’s fairly normal for the dog to have a small localised reaction where they’ve been bitten, it normally goes down after a couple of days.

Wolfiefan · 21/06/2025 22:01

Don’t go on Google. Look at the info leaflet with the medication. I don’t think it does cover ticks. It’s the head you need to check you got. Did you use a tick remover and twist it free?

Edited

I am a vet and can confirm advocate does not kill ticks. Plus imidoclopramid is one the insecticides that is being found in water courses and is affecting other insects and fish. Much better to move to a tablet product like Bravecto, simparica, nexgard or frontpro.

Graia · 21/06/2025 22:33

I use nexgard and I know it works because the ticks are always dead when I find them (they turn up in the brush on her daily groom - she’s long-haired and I wouldn’t see them otherwise). I would take my dog to the vet’s if I saw a skin reaction like this.

Trixibella · 21/06/2025 22:52

We use simparica - it kills ticks once they have bitten so when I check every evening, I find dead ones, if anything, never anything engorged.

obviously if a tick is just on fur, hasn’t bitten and is hitching a ride it won’t have been affected so you need to check that sort of thing too (live ticks on carpets / sofas / bedding dependent on your dogs habits).
