Did your dog change after 1.5 years?

My dog is 1.5 years and I'm wondering if this is what he'll be like for the next few years, or will he change at all as he gets older? What was your dog like at 1.5 and did he change at all?

Depends what breed. We have a lab who we adopted at age 2. Lab's are well known for taking a while to mature. He's hit 4 now and has slowed right down. Almost overnight.

They're all different. As previous poster said, the breed/size can make a difference, so can the sex, but a lot is down to their individual temperament. They're like kids, they all mature at different rates.
A lot do tend to calm down after 2-3 years but some stay boisterous and puppy like for longer than that.

Mines a lab, I ignored all warnings about how hard they are. He was typical puppy u to 9 month, quite quick to train , bright but very mouthy. At nine months he became a disobedient sod. That lasted until around 2.5 years. He’s 4 now and still young and giddy but a lot more settled than he was. I’m assuming this is him till he starts to slowdown so maybe 8/9.

We've had several dogs of the hunt-point-retrieve breeds, which are notoriously slow to mature.

Unlike our terrier, who grew up markedly at 2, and again at 4, they seem to shift gear out of puppyhood at about 3, and then slowly taper into proper adulthood. By about 6 they're very nice dogs...

I have a small, companion style breed, if that helps!

Mine is 2.5 and he a "proper" dog now at 1.5 he was a teenager and a total arsehole at times, but in general he was a good boy🐶 he is a spaniel so they can be A LOT

Ours calmed down between 2 and 3. She's 4 now and relatively calm most of the time! She's a lab/ terrier mix.

Sonolanona · 25/06/2025 00:30

Mine assumed her adult character at about 2.5/3 years old.

(Which is: independent minded, a tad gobby at times to other dogs, huge drive to chase stuff, and absolutely perfect at home!)

DominoRules · 25/06/2025 06:26

Mine is very different at 3.5 to 1.5 - he’s much more settled and steady, still just as energetic and playful though which I doubt will ever change! he’s a Springer)

Depends. Can you continue to train a dog? Of course? Does behaviour change due to many different factors? Yes. Is a puppy different from an adult? Of course. All dogs mature differently.
What exactly are you hoping or fearing will change?
