Taking dog to France

Has anyone used Abbeywell Vets at Folkestone for an animal health certificate before boarding the train/ferry? It was recommended by a local vet practice as an easier and cheaper alternative to them doing it but DH is a bit nervous in case we turn up and can't get it for some reason.

Or any alternative recommendations?

Ddog is having her rabies vaccine tomorrow so that is all sorted.

I've seen though that she will be a tape worm medication administered befire her return to the UK. Again, has anyone got experience of this (particularly in France )?

Any other considerations before taking her abroad? Will mainly be France but may pop into Belguim for a bit.

There are other vets that will provide an AHC for a similar price to Abbeywell. We have one local to us (Notts/Derbyshire) and paid £100 for two dogs earlier this year. I prefer to get it sorted rather than having to coordinate a stop on the way to pick up.

I've no experience of vets in France for tapeworm

Thanks @tizwozliz very few vets seem to do it here in South Wales and those that do are a lot more expensive (min £225) and also have very little availability as only certain vets at the practice can do it.

I'm in France at the moment with ddog. Most vets will do the tapeworm treatment (ask for a consultation for travel and they'll know what you mean). There is a Facebook group called 'Map of recommended vets for tapeworm treatment' - people post their recommendations for vets in Europe and you can ask for recommendations in any town.

Abbeywell get lots of recommendations on FB groups about travelling to France but I haven’t used them myself. If you follow their instructions then it should be a breeze.
Regarding vets in France to administer the worming tablet, most vets have ex-pats as clients who pop back to the UK so know the routine. It’s five days max before ‘arriving’ back to UK and 24 hours minimum. The regulations state before arrival back in the UK, but I was rejected by Brittany Ferries once for arriving at check-in within 24 hours of departure from France although well within arrival in UK. So I would suggest you find a vet and book three days before you travel back. Appointments are easily available - if you don’t speak French, go in person in the morning and show them the AHC and they will know what you need and make you an appointment. They are all closed from 12 to 2pm though. Cost will be between €30 & €50.

Thank you so much @SharpWriter I'll check that out

Thanks @BeepBoopBop . My French is a bit rusty but I plan to brush up. First phrase I'll be learning is "tape worm" 🤣

Good idea about taking in the AHC. Due to the 24hr rule I'll probably have to find a vets near where we're staying rather than near Calais so not sure if they will know any English or not.

Vermifuge!
My vet speaks excellent English, unlike my doctor. Fortunately only the dog needs worming!

I used Abbeywell last year and they fantastic. If you use again you get a discount

You must take the AHC to your appointment in France as their is a section the French vet needs to sign to say the treatment has been given.
The good news is that Starmer negotiated the return of the pet passport in the latest trade deal though we have no time scale yet.
