Beagle refusing certain chews & treats.

Morning, just looking for some advice.

my almost 18 month old Beagle has become a little fuss pot with certain treats and chews, refusing ones he previously loved.

We try to only give natural chews as much as possible, i.e tracheas, marrow bones, dried chicken feet etc, mainly to help with keeping his teeth clean and giving him appropriate stuff to chew on, so he doesn’t go for objects he shouldn’t.

but he has started refusing them, just sniffs them and walks off, leaves them around the house until they end up having to be thrown away. He previously loves them, tracheas would be demolished, he’s go back to the bones for ages but not anymore.

consisering Beagles are meant to be so food obsessed, should I be concerned? Do dogs just randomly go off things & therefore if he’s refused it I shouldnt waste my money buying more of the same in the hopes he will start liking them again.

As long as you are sure that there are no problems with his dentition that could be causing pain, then I wouldn't worry too much. Perhaps just try offering things occasionally to clean his teeth a bit rather than giving regular treats.

In our experience, some dogs just grow out of chewing, in much the same way as some kids grow out of toys. We've had two that did continue being avid chewers into adulthood, but the others weren't really fussed about chews or treats after the initial puppy/adolescent phase. He might just not be much of a chewer.

My dog (not a beagle) also used to love tracheas and various other natural chews but similar to yours stopped being interested around that age. I did wonder if she had tooth/jaw ache or something but she was eating her normal meals and the vet said no she was fine so like pp suggested just grew out needing to gnaw!! She still likes a lamb braid but they aren’t as hard.

He tries to chew stuff when stuff he shouldn’t like shoes etc but he has them taken off him and redirected to appropriate ones.
All beagles i’ve met have wolfed any treat down so he has me stumped, it may be worth a teeth check maybe, just to rule it out. He eats his regular food & training treats no problem.

We had a beagle and she did randomly go off things. She did also grow out of ripping things to shreds at about the age of your dog. If everything else is fine, I wouldn’t worry.

I have a lovely beagle cross and he's way more of a fuss pot than his husky sisters who eat whatever is placed before them. He likes regular food and some treats. Carrots and apple slices are his favourites.

I’ve had many dogs of many breeds - no Beagles but I have had a Lab, the apex of the food obsessed canine and several of them, including the Lab, were quite fussy.

My sister has a beag, my cousin has my dogs sister, they never refuse food.
i wonder if mine is just fussy then 😁 maybe he doesn’t like the stinky treats.
he’s anybodys for a cube of cheese though
