If you were looking for a pet sitter to sit with your dog while you went out for an evening or for lunch or whatever, what website would you use?
Or to drop in daily on your cat / hamster / snake?

My DD (3 years studying animal care at college) is wanting to get some work over the summer and onwards, but we don't know where to start.

I'd probably ask for recommendations from my breed club or the vet, rather than finding a website or looking for ads. I suppose it depends what your needs are really, but I'd rather go on personal recommendations.

I know that probably isn't very helpful though, sorry.

Good luck to your daughter anyway.

Agree with PP - personal recommendations. I wouldn't use someone (likely uninsured, unverified and without any proper training/experience) off a website or app - not simply because I wouldn't trust them with my dogs safety, but I also wouldn't trust them to be responsible with my dogs.

I used Pawshake at first, & picked a cat sitter according to how many good references she had.

Since I wasn't too happy with that sitter, I then found someone recommended to me by the rescue my cat came from, & I’ve recommended her to other people in turn.

Could your DD volunteer for any local pet shelters & pick up some contacts that way as a start?

Someone recommended Cat in a Flat to me - just cats though.

Cat in a flat or look on Google maps for pet sitters near me.

Personal recommendations. I wouldn’t trust any of those apps or websites - sorry.

Rover.com is an app for this. I’ve made a lot of money over last few years and now just have one regular dog who’s like part of our family

A lot of people round us ask on the local community FB page for recommendations. It might be worth your DD posting on your local page offering her services and explaining that she has done an animal care course at college. She might get some uptake there.

My DS and DiL sit through Rover at their home and both them and the dogs have a lovely time
They have actually made enough to pay a chunk of their holiday to the US
obviously they had to provide reference and evidence of animal first aid training too

helpfulperson · 06/06/2025 12:58

She could approach local petsitters about casual work. Mine has a few people who work for her.

Thank you. Facebook it is.
Focus on small pets not dogs.
