Has your dog had teeth removed? How old were they?

Just curious. Wondering what the average age is for dogs to need their teeth removed due to rot? Is it an older dog thing or can it happen to young dogs too? I read a lot about dogs having bad teeth and needing teeth taking out.

(I do brush my dog's teeth, but just wondering).

crickey, never had a dog that had to have teeth pulled. I guess it depends on the breed.

Crispsanddips25 · 30/05/2025 00:47

Ours made it to fourteen with no teeth out, or any teeth brushing. They were yellow as he got older but no noticeable issues and nothing ever suggested by vet and he was seen regularly.

To be honest, when did teeth brushing for dogs become a thing? I’m sure it’s only in recent years.

I suppose diet, breed will make a difference.

Our dog had to have her first tooth removed at 6 years old. She had cracked a large back tooth, chewing on something outside. She just had three teeth removed at age 9. The back tooth parallel to the first one removed, a little one at the side, and one at the front. The back one had worn down, the other two small ones had receding roots. To be honest, the first one I knew was necessary - her breath was bad in a way it hadn't been before, so I knew there was something wrong there. But the most recent set, well, given the tremendous cost, I am worrying if the vet is a bit too enthusiastic. That said, her breath smells lovely now and we are going to keep up with the teeth cleaning, even though she isn't very keen.

Dog is 11 and needs 2 removed. Vet said they will fall out naturally but better for them to be removed under controlled conditions. Also said by age 4 (!) most dogs need some sort of dental treatment and our dog had done well to get this far without any intervention.

PlantDoctor · 30/05/2025 01:16

I've read that greyhounds are prone to them because racers are often fed a mushy food that doesn't keep their teeth in good condition. Hard foods like bones are good for their teeth.

My dog had all but one removed 3 weeks ago, he's approx 12 ( rescue dog )

I have a pugapoo that needed 6 extractions when he was about 11. I could tell he was pain, he kept constantly licking his lips in the night, couldn’t settle and would wipe his mouth with his paw. He is 14 now and last year I had his teeth cleaned under sedation so the vet could check the rest of his teeth, he had 2 more extractions. Toothache is terrible so I would hate for him to suffer again. Now although he has smelly breath, he is free from pain. It’s ridiculously expensive and they seem to charge same amount for a tooth clean as extractions.

My first staffie had no teeth removed and lived to 14. My second rescue, got her aged 8yrs, had apparently had teeth removed begore and she had to have two removed when I rehomed her six months ago.

OnlyYellowRoses · 01/06/2025 08:20

Rescue girl. Had 18 teeth removed around a year after we got her. She managed quite well and we’ve only had to let go of her having harder biscuit type treats as otherwise she chokes.

ThePoshUns · 01/06/2025 08:53

My border terrier is 13 and hasn’t had any teeth removed. Our vet wants to give her a GA to clean her teeth but we have said no, I think a GA at her age is too much of a risk for something that’s not essential.

beardediris · 01/06/2025 10:36

My miniature poodle had 5 removed when he was 11. Poodle are renowned for having a low pain threshold and he is a total drama llama. But he seemed oblivious and came home refused some very expensive wet food I bought specially for him and ate his dried food. He was and two years later is totally fine, in fact I forgot he had it done until reading this.

EleanorReally · 01/06/2025 10:37

age of 10
she is now 12 and she may need more out

EleanorReally · 01/06/2025 10:38

i cleaned my dog's teeth >30 years ago, for a while anyway.

sjtrain69 · 01/06/2025 11:46

It’s worth making the effort to brush your dogs teeth regularly but doggy dentistry is expensive. Whatever help you can give them to have healthy gums and teeth is worth it

Astrabees · 01/06/2025 15:24

We adopted a rescue toy poodle aged 8 last year. He has no teeth at all, he had been so badly neglected they were all rotten and some bits of his gums were infected. The rescue had all his teeth taken out and he manages just fine. We soak his food but he can eat it without. He has a corncake for his treat and breaks it down into small pieces to eat. Here he is with his “brother” rescued from the same terrible puppy farm.

First 3 dogs didn't need any removed and they lived to 8, 13 and the third is (still alive) nearly 11. The fourth dog made it to 5! Before needing to have any out. Not sure why. She had some front ones removed so now always has her tongue out slightly lol

mondaytosunday · 01/06/2025 18:19

Yes my dog had a few of her top middle teeth removed when I had them cleaned about three years ago when she was ten. Thing is my vet suggested cleaning for my then 12 year old and I just thought the younger one might as well too, the vet hadn’t expressed any concerns either her. The older one didn’t need any removing.

smartarsey · 01/06/2025 18:22

My JRT was born without enamel on her teeth ..She has had about 17 teeth removed and having the procedure more often the older she gets! She manages really well. She has to have sedation and the vet gives her remaining teeth a really good clean .
She is 10 this month

ninjahamster · 01/06/2025 18:22

Mine is 9 and a half, no teeth issues yet.

jljlj · 01/06/2025 18:24

Some dogs are just really prone to it. I brush my dog's teeth with enzyme toothpaste, put dental stuff in his food, make sure he doesn't get near anything sugary ever and has great quality dog food. He's had 20 teeth removed across 3 operations. He is 6yo so not old. Otherwise healthy.

jljlj · 01/06/2025 18:25

And the vet said I shouldn't beat myself up over it as I'm trying and there's nothing more I can do. Plus also said that plenty of dogs are happy and problem free with zero teeth!

I think that is right re breed. Some breeds are fine and some breeds are a nightmare for teeth.

YourSignalFadedIntoAnotherWorld · 01/06/2025 18:29

This was my day job.

The factors are diet, the shape of their mouths but magnitudes more are the amount of bone and the quality of the bone surrounding the teeth.

Small dogs that don't chew much and dogs with small maxillae and mandibles are going to lose teeth a lot sooner than dogs that regularly chew and have more and better quality bone surrounding their teeth.

I have removed every tooth at one sitting from dogs like yorkies, small poodles, chihuahuas and the like and it is like picking ripe fruit with some of them not even needing an instrument, just a wiggle with fingers while removing a tooth that has to come out due to a crack (don't give them antlers) in a larger chewer with good dense bone can make you sweat like a bitch getting it out because every other factor is healthy.

sunshinechaser · 01/06/2025 18:30

My dog needed 3 teeth removed age 10. It was expensive!
