Can anyone recommend any hydration drinks or supplements to try and get a dog to drink more?

Thanks

If you don't feel your dog is drinking enough, try offering filtered or bottled water. Sometimes they don't like the chlorine in tap water. The smell of it seems to put them off. They can also sometimes be weird about certain types of water bowl.

Failing that you could try giving it goats milk, they also like that as ice cubes during warm weather.

Really, if you feel seriously worried about the dog's fluid intake, you should probably speak to the vet.

I have used Oralade when my old boy had pancreatitis. I did water it down on the vet ‘s advice. I have also used Karnlea Bone Broth, which again I watered down sometimes.
When he was a puppy he had Goats Milk if it was a really hot day. It was hard to know which he liked - he was a lab so everything was appreciated

You can make electrolytes with sugar and salt, my vet gave me a link to a recipe but you might want to check with your own vet.

When our elderly dog went off drinkong water out of his bowl, we noticed he'd drink out of our glasses and cups so we got a few plastic picnic cups for him.

If you think your dog isn't drinking enough then I'd take them to the vets.
In the meantime you could add a little water to their food to make a tasty 'gravy'
Soak their biscuits in water.
Try giving them rain water ( my dd preferred puddle water )
Make sure none of the food you give them has salt in it , esp if you are giving them human food.

Is there any particular reason why you want them to drink more ?

Just want to add that some dogs aren't big drinkers. Our current girl doesn't drink as much as our previous boy.

In agreement with @ScottBakula that soaking the food is a good option for increasing fluid intake. We add boiling water to the kibble then cool it down with goats milk.

What does your DDog eat @OhPolly? Ours used to eat solely tinned and now they’ve been switched to dry food they naturally drink more.

She usually has dried kibble.

We have already been to the vets who suspect she has ascites/free fluid around her abdomen. They says she was a bit dehydrated yesterday and put her on some fluids for the afternoon.

We've took her home on their advice and are awaiting specialist hospital input on Friday morning.

Sorry about her potential diagnosis.
You should probably ignore most of what has been posted here and just take advice from your vet.
I hope that the situation improves...

Definitely take advice from your vet.

(Or, alternatively add mud, cow dung and algae which seems to be my dog's favoured flavour of water Grin)

RedRiverHog · 28/05/2025 18:08

I have goat milk powder that you mix with milk. My dog loves it.

Hope your dog is ok OhPolly.

I put water in with dry kibble, and a spoonful of wet food to make a gravy. She gets cold soup in summer and hot porridge (soaked for a while) in winter!

Goats milk powder or better dog.

BruceLeTerror · 28/05/2025 21:47
