15 week WCS wake up time!

We brought our lovely 15 week WCS puppy home when she was just over 8 weeks. We were off work for 3 weeks to get her settled in. She’s exceeded all our expectations - which were that it’d be like having a baby and toddler all rolled into one and utterly exhausting. Toilet training going very well. She’s really receptive to training - we do little and often. Got puppy classes organised from next week. We’re a family of 4 and our working patterns mean she’s only left alone in the house when we choose to do so - she’s up to 20 minutes every other day. She seems happy and content most of the time. Can be bitey as expected when tierd and as like to chew the wooden furniture given half a chance, along with stones and random sticks!

After an early evening 10 minute sniffy wander or play in the garden she tends to settle down with us for snoozing on the sofa. Last outside wee around 10.45pm, bed in her crate downstairs at 11pm at the latest where she happily trots in and settles. It has a dark blanket over it.

She wakes between 4-4.30am every morning for a wee and poo and then will settle back in her crate until 5-5.30am. Since day 1 she’s been up at that time, (no matter how many times up in the night) After being fed at 6am she’ll sometimes snooze for up to an hour and half.

How do we stretch her sleep until 6/6.30? Is this habit? Is she just hungry (fed 6/10/2/6 although we aimed for 7/11/3/7)? Do we just need to live with it until she’s older? Do we just ignore the whine at 5am in the hope she settles. I don’t expect her to sleep 11-6, but the 5am wakes ups for the day are hard going - maybe that’s just the downside to her being generally fabulous!

Just let her whine and put in ear plugs. She is learning that you will respond and come and provide fun. She needs to fit in with your routine. Feed her at the time in the morning that is convenient for you.
Dogs pick up habits really quickly. It only takes one day with mine when I feed them earlier and they expect that the next day.

Coffeeishot · 28/05/2025 09:46

She will settle overnight honestly my WCS was up in the night for a wee then at 6ish until he was 6 months, do you cover the crate to keep light out ? Also I started setting an alarm 5 minutes after his usual get up time and moved it on, we are up at 7.30 now.

Just to add - make life unpredictable, don't walk and feed at the same time every day - otherwise you will become a slave to the dog's routine.

My 3 year old was like that as a puppy. Needed to be let out for a wee around 3 a.m. and up to 6 a.m for months. Only she then spent an hour biting me instead of sleeping.
She did grow out of it. I can't remember how old she was, but she definitely slept through the night at 7 months old. She now wakes up anytime between 7 and 8.

Thanks. We are very unpredictable. DH works shifts, I’m part-time, DC do lots of activities so she gets taken here there and everywhere. So the one thing I thought might be good was a vague eating schedule, today she’s eaten at 6, DC1 took her for a wander at 8.30 and she was hungry on return so fed her again at 9. Will also try the earplugs!

Personally I would keep the same routine going for now, you don’t want her to think you are not listening when she needs to go outside and then for her to do an accident in the house. Our border collie puppy took to around 4/5 months old before he would fully sleep all night without needing to go outside, we persevered and we’ve never had an accident in 7 years, it will be worthwhile, once she gets older she will be able to hold on longer.

Coffeeishot · 28/05/2025 10:05

Personally I wouldnt leave her to whine too long, what time would you like her to get up and fed? I know she will be on several meals at this age but I always gave mine his first bowl at 7 regardless of the 6 am get up, the meals cut down though so you won't be feeding her that early forever. God they really are just babies aren't they 😀

CyberStrider · 28/05/2025 10:52

Once we moved to three meals a day our wake up times got later, so I wouldn't worry at this stage. I think it will come as she's older, I'd just get up, feed her and let her snooze again.

Do you use blackout blinds or a cover on her crate?

soupmaker · 28/05/2025 13:07

Thanks for the replies.

in answer to questions;

Her crate is covered by a dark, thick blanket and is in our hall downstairs which is the darkest part of the house. Maybe it’s not blackout enough.

in an ideal world she’d be awake for the day at 6.30am, fed before 7am. I have no issue at all with her needing out once before then, we always let her out when she whines. If she’s been out at 4am, she’ll not wee at 5.30am!

If not sleepy at 5.30am she is incredibly bitey and seems on edge until fed. Hence feeding at 6am!

This too shall pass, hopefully!

I just read that she’s expected to go 12 hours a night without food - that’s a lot at such a young age. Can you adjust her feeding times a bit?

doodleschnoodle · 29/05/2025 07:48

Pic please! Wockers are the best dogs. Ours is 12 and still mad as a box of frogs.

Yes. Yesterday we tried feeding her at 7 instead of 6 and I added an extra handful of kibble plus left over broccoli and green beans. Last wee at 11.30pm, as we all fell asleep on the sofa. First wake up call 5.15am then settled back down until after 6!

She did it again. Up for business at 5, back to sleep until 6. What a massive difference getting 6 hours in one shift makes. Current status due to the teething!
