It’s worrying how food obsessed my dog is, he has two biggish meals and loads of treats but he will literally sleep in the kitchen all day as if he’s sulking waiting for more food. I will pick him up to bring him in with us but he only seems to be interested when we have food, he sleeps on his own all the time. He will run out when we’re eating & start barking at us or trying to steal it. I’m also worried that he’s depressed, is he lonely, does he need company? I know French bulldogs normally like to be with other dogs just worried as I always feel like he’s on his own most of the day and doesn’t want to socialise with us? Does anyone have the same problem

I’ve got a pug not a frenchie but I gather both these breeds are prone to being very food orientated.
We are mindful of our dog’s weight so he has 2 (weighed) meals and limited snacks.
We take him out 3 times per day which keeps him alert and happy, plus we are lucky to have a good sized garden so we encourage lots of garden time in addition to the walks. You don’t mention if he goes out much?
we also try to take him different routes/walks and some of the walks are for sniffing rather than exercise. He does love other dogs and occasionally goes to dog care but mainly hangs out with his humans.

Is he overweight?
Does he get enough physical and mental stimulation?

@SassyCrabhow old is he and how long have you had him?

LandSharksAnonymous · 27/05/2025 05:23

Honestly, that sounds like resource (food) guarding.

He’s not depressed. He’s not lonely (unless you literally just feed him and ignore him the rest of the time). He’s got behavioural issues. Get a behaviourist in and fix it - and stop using terms like ‘food obsessed’ which minimises some pretty unpleasant behaviour.

Don’t add another dog to the mix when you already have issues with your existing one.

Mine aren’t food oriented at all . One in particular is hugely fussy and will not eat if he doesn’t like what’s served , the other not so much . They both love treats but are not obsessive over them .

He goes for walks once a day which he’s happy on the walk but then as soon as he comes home he’s just in his bed and he’s only 3 years old. We’ve had him since he was a puppy but it’s only got worst since we’ve had our child, I do my best to show him affection and try to bring him in for a cuddle but he just doesn’t seem happy! My baby is good with him also and doesn’t really bother him only for occasional cuddle. But he won’t go in the garden unless to do toilet which I find strange for a dog as well! He had his mad hour where he’s in a playful mood but apart from that he isolates himself and just waits in the kitchen for food even straight after he’s eaten

What does your vet say?
He may be struggling to breathe, French Bulldogs can have quite a low life expectency

I haven’t been to the vet about it yet and no his nose is normal and not deformed like other frenchies fortunately!
