She stinks!! Please help

DDog stinks, it’s really getting me down and it makes me not want to let her upstairs/on the sofa. It’s the topical dog smell, but really strong.

She’s only two, and a Cavapoo.

I wash her regularly - tried various shampoos. She’s groomed every six weeks.

I know dogs smell, but I’ve never had one this stinky.

Any tips or advice would be much appreciated!

She shouldn’t, does she have a poodle type coat (non shedding)? Have you looked at her teeth etc?

Might be worth a trip to the vet to check her out.

BruceLeTerror · 25/05/2025 16:53

Wipe her coat over with Apple Cider Vinegar? Pretty sure I read somewhere it’s good at neutralising the doggy smell (and the vinegar smell quickly evaporates!)

beccahamlet · 25/05/2025 16:55

It's very likely to be her ears. Sniff them and you'll know.

pancakestastelikecrepe · 25/05/2025 16:57

Anal glands probably want 'relieving' - it's a trip to the vet, however, you can learn to do them, yourself 😬

CarrieMoonbeams · 25/05/2025 16:59

I agree with @Keepingthingsinteresting , teeth or perhaps an ear infection. Dogs really shouldn't stink, sure they have their own smell but if she's regularly groomed it shouldn't be strong.

Oh another thought, it's not her collar that smells is it? My friend has a dog that loves to swim, but she leaves his fabric collar on him all the time and I've noticed recently how sour he smells, probably because his collar takes ages to dry 😕.

(Sorry, I took so long to type that and others have said it too!)

terracelane23 · 25/05/2025 17:06

Could be an ear infection as others have said.
If it’s nothing medical then how about using dog deodorant? I use one by bugalugs. I think it’s just called dog cologne. It smells of talc.

redboxer321 · 25/05/2025 17:37

I am not an expert on a cavapoo's washing requirements but could you be washing her too much? My dog has a very different coat admittedly but I have washed her once in 5 years. She doesn't smell.
I would want to find out what the groomer is using on her too.

Other thing that springs to mind is does she have a yeast infection? That makes a dog honk. Or it did the one I knew that suffered with it.

BarkItOff · 25/05/2025 18:26

It’s bound to be either ears, teeth or anal glands. Check her over and work out the source of the smell and then you can tackle it.

RitaAndFrank · 25/05/2025 18:30

If none of the above, have you considered that it might be her diet? We feed our three year old lab homemade food / Years and he doesn’t smell at all.

survivingunderarock · 25/05/2025 19:52

Food. It really makes a difference.

Tulipvase · 25/05/2025 19:56

Are you perhaps over washing? We have a lab, which I know is a bit different as they have waterproof coats but she has only been washed with soap a couple of times and she is 4. The vet says she is in amazing condition, she of course smells of dog as she is one but nothing offensive.

Yes this. My 4 yo cavapoo doesn’t smell. She gets bathed at least once a week and has no skin problems.

alternatively, dog might be rubbing or eating in fox/cat poo in backyard. This perfume is our’s favourite. She’s learnt to digest instead of rub to hide her love for it!

UhhhhhhhOK · 25/05/2025 20:37

Actually have you discussed this with the groomer and have they suggested anything?

Probably worth a visit to the vet to give once over as others have suggested. Good luck!

NeedForSpeed · 25/05/2025 20:41

Dogs shouldn't need regular bathing. How often is she being bathed? Is she being dried out properly afterwards?

Does she have a skin yeast infection? Ear infections stink too. Check her paws for smell.

Is she a nervous dog? Fear pheromones absolutely stink - it's a greasy smell that sticks to everything.

How is her breath? Anal glands needing expressed?

How often do you wash her bedding? We boil wash our dogs bedding in a washing bag (to catch the fur) every two weeks or so. More often if she's managed to come home muddy and soak it.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 25/05/2025 20:46

Anal glands is my guess. She's probably cleaning her bottom and licking herself
Ask the groomer to check if they're full
A smaller dog does smaller poos which don't press on the gland to empty naturally
My Westie used to have this but I give him extra veg and apples with his meals now

EffinMagicFairy · 25/05/2025 20:53

Last time DDog really smelt she had an ear infection, we had some drops to clear it up and also some ear cleaner which we try and remember to do once a week.

Excuse my ignorance, but I’d have thought weekly bathing is rather too frequent? Or is it because she rolls regularly in dirt? I’m not a dog owner just curious.

Yeh it’s not recommended.

This is purely personal preference and we’ve been fortunate dog is ok. She has 2 full day dog walks a week in parks and woodlands out with her doggy friends and sometimes comes home literally smothered in fox poo.
