Urinary incontinence in 5 yo dog

this is very sporadic - do every 4-6 weeks or so find a wet patch where she has been lying down. I keep thinking I should ask vet and then it doesn’t happen for ages and I think maybe it was nothing she seems fine now.

she is spayed so perhaps just the usual urinary incontinence associated with this. Just wondered if anyone had experienced this? What tests are vets likely to do?

Hi there,
Yes, one of my girls had this too, in fact I'll try to find other posts referring to it in a minute.

She's 11 now and has been on a medication called Propalin syrup for about 8 years. It's pretty cheap (about £20-ish for a bottle that lasts my girl for about 5 weeks) and it works really well. She still gets very occasional 'leaks' - about once every 3 months - but that's it. It's a prescription medication so the vet will need to see your girl every 6 months, but we've had no issues at all with it.

thank You for your reply. Can I ask at the 6 monthly check do they do any blood tests? I read this is sometimes required. She hates going to the vets even for a slightest examination so I am dreading taking her

Do you have a mobile vet in your area? Has she got a UTI? I'd definitely get her checked by your vet-she could be in pain Nd you won't know as animals are amazing at hiding it. And many don't stop eating when in pain either.

Sorry, have now realised that I don't know how to link!! Oh dear, I feel very old now!

The most recent one that I was also on was started on 9 April by a user called Doggiejamz, the thread was called Incontinence in dogs. Hope you can find it.

No, they didn't need blood tests at all. I took a urine sample in with me the first time, it was clear and she was prescribed Propalin straight away then. I always take a urine sample in with me for the 6 months check but she's never had a UTI.

Ah thanks this is reassuring. I will try and get a urine sample

What breed is she and how old was she when spayed?

CarrieMoonbeams · 22/05/2025 21:02

I use one of these, it's got a little hole in the back of the handle bit so you just tip it back and the sample goes in the bottle. Easy! Have a few tries first though, my dogs were very suspicious initially about me following them around with a little spade!

And please remember to put the sample in the fridge when you get it before you go to the vet - I only learned very recently that it can give a different result if it's not kept cool.

Some breeds are very prone to spay incontinence, and early spaying can make it more likely.

She is collie cross. Spayed after first season (just over a year old)
