Dog coughing/clearing throat

TessTickle0 · 20/05/2025 11:05

So my 10yr lab has started doing this most days,a sort of coughing hacking sound.
Some days it's only once, some days several times and some days not at all.
Any ideas at all what it could be and if a cause for concern?
He's perfectly happy and normal otherwise.

Sounds like kennel cough. How long has he been doing it?

LandSharksAnonymous · 20/05/2025 11:15

Depending on where you are, there's a nasty bout of Kennel Cough doing the rounds at the moment (South-East).

TessTickle0 · 20/05/2025 15:18

I don't think it is kennel cough.
He's had that and this is different.
Plus my other dog doesn't do it, just the older lab, probably for a month or so.

Needs to see a vet. Tell them the symptons over the phone . They may ask for you to keep the dog in the car in case they are infectious.

It could be any things from acid reflux, heart issues, laryngeal paralysis, tracheal collapse to just a slight infection. But symptons in an older dog lasting a month do need checking.

PilatesPeach · 20/05/2025 15:25

Reverse sneeze? But the length of time do get it checked by a vet.

lovemycbf · 20/05/2025 15:30

Mine did this as she had a worsening heart mumer.
could also be allergies

lovemycbf · 20/05/2025 15:30

And I agree with others a vet checkup is needed

PlatinumBrunette · 20/05/2025 15:34

Video him doing it so you can show the vet. You can guarantee he won’t do it on demand when he’s there!
And yes, vet visit.

Bunionbabe · 21/05/2025 22:34

My old lab did this and it was years before I realised that the soft rope slip lead we always used had probably damaged his trachea. He never pulled on the lead but obviously it was harming him. Felt so awful after I realised what I'd been doing to him.

Toomanydogwalks · 21/05/2025 22:41

My elderly setter had something like this, it was her age and a ‘baggy throat’. Think it’s a lab thing too. Vet told me about it. It was harmless.
I'd get it checked by your vet.

Coffeeishot · 21/05/2025 22:44

It might be kennel cough as pp have said my dog had it this time last year and bless him he was coughing and spluttering, although with an older dog I'd probably speak to your vet see what they say.

I hadn't read on its been a month it's not going to get better on it's own get an appointment.

A cough can be fluid in the lungs - symptomatic of a heart disease - get a vet appt asap, your dog might be very uncomfortable.

faerietales · 22/05/2025 09:14

Any new and unusual ongoing symptoms should always be checked by a vet.

DustRabbit · 22/05/2025 09:26

As others have said, needs to be checked by a vet.

A friend's lab started with a similar sort of cough at a similar sort of age. It ended up being laryngeal paralysis. Declined the surgery option due to the restrictions that would mean (no more swimming ever) and just managed symptoms and dog lived happily until 13

SpanielsGalore · 22/05/2025 09:57

My almost 10 year old coughs everytime she has a drink. She's done it for months. I mentioned it to the vet, but he didn't think it was concerning. Her heart and lungs are fine.

Great advice

TessTickle0 · 22/05/2025 10:20

Of course I shall take him to the vets to get checked over.
I just wanted some ideas of things it could be-so thank you all.
I have looked into everything suggested and not sure it's any of them but I'm not a vet! So will book him in.
He's his usual happy dumb lab self so can't see has he's in any discomfort really.
The videoing is a great idea but it's always so random I'm not sure we would be able to 😀
