You might remember my 15 year old rescue dog Meg who was attacked by a neighbour’s dog nearly four weeks ago and had emergency surgery? Well, she seems to have recovered pretty much from her ordeal although she is very withdrawn and much more unwilling to go on walks which I can understand.

We have had to use incontinence pads around the house for a while as she sometimes left a tiny damp patch after sleeping heavily (which she is doing a lot of the time) but recently she seems to just be weeing at random in the house despite having constant access to the garden and us still persevering as much as we can with regular short walks.

We took her to the vet last week as she wasn’t eating and was moaning and crying a lot. He examined her, couldn’t find anything specific wrong with her apart from her recently diagnosed heart murmur and just told us ‘she is just a very old dog.’

Sorry for the rambling post but I’m worried that this might be Meg beginning to suffer and I’d hate to think we’re just keeping her going for our sake. She doesn’t seem ill but just like there’s no joy in her life.

How do you know when it’s time to say goodbye? 😢

I’ve got to be honest, I think the time has come.
I know it’s tough, but she’s had a good innings and it sounds like she’s not getting any pleasure out of life - you’re keeping her alive for your own sake not hers.
The vet can give her a sedative before the actual cannula goes in, this calms them and I was able to hold my dog in my arms. So sorry 💐

I'm really sorry OP, but I think it's time to say good bye.
If she isn't eating and is moaning and crying a lot then she clearly isn't happy any more.
It's so difficult to make the decision when it isn't because of an illness. One of mine was like that. He stopped eating and just looked so very sad all the time. I felt so guilty and second guessed myself many times. But looking back, I know I did the right thing for him.
I am sure you will make the best decision for your dog too.

I'm sorry op, but if she is not eating and she is in pain, then I think it is time. It is awful I know, but it is the last gift we can give them after a lifetime of love and loyalty. Would it be possible for the vet to come to your house? I do find that makes it a bit easier for all involved. Sending lots of love to you and your beautiful girl xx

I think it's time, sadly. I know it's really hard to admit this to yourself.
You need to do this last kindness for her so she keeps her dignity. So sorry, I've been there and it is heartbreaking. 💐

They don’t like being incontinent - that’s when it’s time. So sorry.

Be brave and try to give her a good end
