Suddenly scared of going down stairs

Ddog is suddenly scared (pacing, saliva, etc) of going down the stairs. She's 10 and has always been a highly anxious dog, but this is extreme even for her. None of us recall her falling or tripping on them the reluctance just started up suddenly. I'm thinking either eyesight or hips. She actually seems OK on steps outside but the ones in the house she gets stuck at the top of, however, she'll still willingly follow us up there if we go, especially at night to sleep. She can still make it down after a good bit of coaxing so I'm reluctant to barricade the stairs off so she can't come up at night but I can see us ending up there if I can't work out a better solution. She's a big Heinz 57 so she's not the easiest dog to carry down if it came to that.

I'll be taking her to the vet next week but assuming that will lead to a barrage of tests which will make her unhappy (back to the highly anxious again) I'm wondering if any one has any ideas.

I don’t know about the stairs but our 7-year old dog has suddenly become scared of going in the car - after a lifetime of travel and coming on holiday with us. She pants, salivates and refuses to settle, even after a few hours.

I can only imagine that in her mind the car’s become associated with an unpleasant event such as going to the vet.

Does your dog show any sign of pain? When I had a sore knee, it was much worse going downstairs! But it’s weird it’s just in the house - and perhaps like my dog she’s associating them with the memory of pain or something unpleasant.

If only they could speak!!

Are there gaps in between the stairs? Our old dog as he got older was ok with solid stairs but not ones you could see in between. The vet thought it was his eyesight

They are wooden parquet so I’m thinking if her eyes go they just merge into each other. I’ve been googling and saw a suggestion of white gaffer tape on the edges which I might try.

Could it be dementia? Our 13 year old has been diagnosed and does some odd things.

I'd bank on back / hip pain

Vet could do a pain relief trial if you're not keen on tests

I agree.
I would get her vet checked and do a pain trial.
