Appropriate gift for loss of dog

Hi, I'm a dogwalker, I absolutely adore my clients Yesterday one of my older clients sadly died. He was 16, a fab age and a stoic wee chap! He often stayed with me and we were close.
His lovely owners are gutted as am I. I want to get them something to remember their friend without overstepping client relationship (if that makes sense). Flowers arent really their thing, but they do have a lovely garden. Maybe a bush or something? A plant?
A funky pigeon card with a picture of him? Or is that too much?
Ah, I'll miss the wee soul.

That’s lovely of you. My dogwalker gave me a montage of photos she had taken of my old boy through the years. It was lovely, and is opposite me right now.

She used to give us photo cards at Christmas, and I loved seeing him enjoying a social life with his dog pals.

I think a photo card or photo book if you have enough pics, is a lovely momento. It was nice to see how much he meant to her.

I agree with a photo book/ framed picture of the dog. I expect they’ll be grateful whatever you get, it’s a very sweet gesture.

Ecrire · 30/04/2025 20:30

A framed photo of the gorgeous lad.

PanickyBill · 30/04/2025 20:33

My sister got me a memory box that I filled with photos, the tag from my lovely girls collar, one of her toys and things like that.

Wibblywobblybobbly · 30/04/2025 20:37

Going against the grain, I wouldn't want a photo. I don't have photos up at home and I wouldn't want it up as it would.make cry, but then I'd feel awful putting him in a drawer.

How about something like a rose bush or another nice potted plant for the garden? Or some chocolate or brownies, something just to show that you're thinking of them.

purpleme12 · 30/04/2025 20:38

Personally, I'd prefer the photo ideas

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 30/04/2025 20:46

Maybe send them a card and mention that you have some lovely pictures of him, if they'd like copies?

Glitchymn1 · 30/04/2025 20:52

I have not long lost my dog and I wouldn’t want a photo personally (though it is very kind of you). I would prefer a plant and/or a card.

TheFlis · 30/04/2025 20:54

You can get so many roses with lovely and relevant names which most keen gardeners would appreciate.

Lookwhoitisnae · 30/04/2025 21:49

Thanks, some great suggestions. I think a photocard would be too much too soon. So a nice card offering copies is a nice compromise, thanks.
Loving the plant suggestions, thanks. I want something that comes back every year, does dianthus? they are lovely.

At this time of the year a pot of daffodils or a little azalea bush would be something that would come back flowering year after year.

When we had our dog pts, we received a condolence card from the vet. They had included a packet of ‘forget-me-knot’ seeds. We scattered them into a pot and every time they flower we can remember our dog. We thought it was a very thoughtful thing to do.

What about something like this which can have the name of their pet on

https://www.villagerjimsshop.com/collections/pet-slate-hearts

I'd absolutely hate some tacky shit like this.

I wouldn't want photos - I have my own.

A bright bunch of flowers or plant with a note that says sorry for your loss but with a cheerful memory or words about the dog.

Sorry for you loss, OP.

Our vet did exactly this too. It was a lovely thought.

No photos or things with photos. No plaques or things with sayings. I don’t want them in my house but it would rack me with guilt to put them in a drawer.
A card is enough. A plant would be lovely. As would a bottle of whisky, champagne or wine to toast him with.

Each to their own. Tacky shit, as you call it, might be some comfort to someone. The OP was asking for suggestions so maybe just pipe down with the barbed reply to me!!

I really do apologise. My comment was unnecessarily nasty. I'm really sorry.

When my beautiful goldie was hit by a train the police ladies who had helped the search for him bought me a windchime, once he was found
so every time I heard it I would feel like he was with me.
for me it was wonderfully thoughtful, and brought me comfort

you weren't far wrong though, each to their own though.

Many thanks for suggestions. I went with a simple card, a beautiful plant that will flower year after year and some chocs. I did offer copies of pictures but its too raw.
We had a hug and cry then shared our fave funny stories of the wee character!
Thank you.
I did try to find dianthus memories but not in garden centre unfortunately.
